Kazakhstan’s role as a pivotal partner for the United Kingdom was emphasized during the recent OSCE Programme Office report presentation in Astana.

Deputy Ambassador Deirdre Brown extended gratitude to Dr. Frobarth and his team for their invaluable contributions, particularly in human rights, transnational threats, and fostering prosperity.

OSCE’s Human Rights Efforts in Kazakhstan

The UK expressed strong support for the OSCE’s initiatives in promoting human rights in Kazakhstan. Dr. Frobarth’s report highlighted key areas of progress, including gender-based violence and the protection of vulnerable groups.

People particularly commended the OSCE’s recent report on Gender-Based Violence, published ahead of Kazakhstan’s April criminalization of domestic violence.

This report provided critical insights and recommendations that influenced the new legislation, marking a significant step forward for the country.

The UK’s concern was also noted regarding recent calls to restrict the freedoms of LGBT+ individuals in Kazakhstan. Such restrictions would run counter to the principles of human rights and equality.

The UK hopes the Kazakh government will continue to uphold the rights of all its citizens, ensuring that freedoms are not curtailed.

Tackling Transnational Threats

Another focal point of the OSCE’s work in Kazakhstan has been addressing transnational threats. The UK recognized the Programme Office’s efforts in this area, particularly in combating issues such as money laundering and corruption.

The OSCE has initiated crucial steps to strengthen border security and promote digital rights and internet freedom, effectively and transparently managing these challenges.

The OSCE’s comprehensive approach includes supporting the development of small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and enhancing trade facilitation, which are essential for regional stability and economic growth.

These efforts not only help safeguard Kazakhstan’s economic interests but also contribute to the broader security landscape of Central Asia.

UK-Kazakhstan Strategic Partnership

The UK-Kazakhstan Strategic Partnership and Cooperation Agreement, signed earlier this year, underscores the importance of this bilateral relationship. This agreement lays the groundwork for enhanced collaboration across various domains, including trade, education, climate, and security. Continued diplomatic engagement and support for OSCE initiatives further reinforce the UK’s commitment to Kazakhstan as a partner.

OSCE’s Broader Impact in Central Asia

The UK’s recognition of Kazakhstan’s role in supporting multilateral organizations highlights the broader impact of the OSCE’s work in Central Asia. The organization’s efforts in promoting regional stability, economic development, and human rights are vital for the prosperity and security of the region. The UK continues to support these initiatives, recognizing the importance of a stable and prosperous Central Asia for global security.

Summary of OSCE’s Work in Kazakhstan:

Focus Area

Description

Human Rights Promoting equality, addressing gender-based violence, and protecting LGBT+ rights
Transnational Threats Combating money laundering, corruption, and enhancing border security
Economic Development Supporting SMEs, trade facilitation, and promoting economic growth
Digital Rights and Freedom Ensuring internet freedom and digital rights protection
Multilateral Engagement Kazakhstan’s active role in multilateral organizations, supported by the OSCE’s initiatives

The Final Word

The UK’s commendation of the OSCE’s work in Kazakhstan underscores the significance of this partnership. The OSCE’s comprehensive approach, addressing human rights, transnational threats, and economic development, aligns with the UK’s values and strategic interests in the region.

As Kazakhstan continues to play a crucial role in Central Asia, the UK’s support and cooperation through the OSCE remain pivotal in fostering stability, security, and prosperity.
