In latest Humanitarian Aid operation, Monday, 25 March 2024, the Royal Air Force undertook a mission of compassion and solidarity, airdropping more than 10 tonnes of food supplies into the Gaza Strip.

This operation, the first of its kind, underscores a pivotal moment in international efforts to provide life-saving assistance to civilians caught in dire straits.

A Coordinated Effort of Hope

The operation was conducted from Amman, Jordan, with an RAF A400M aircraft gracefully navigating to the northern coastline of Gaza. This mission was part of a broader, Jordanian-led international aid initiative, showcasing the strength of international cooperation in times of need.

The UK worked closely with the Royal Jordanian Air Force, planning and conducting this mission with meticulous precision and heartfelt dedication.

Strategic Humanitarianism in Action

Defence Secretary Grant Shapps articulated the UK’s commitment to alleviating human suffering in Gaza.

“The UK has already tripled our aid budget to Gaza, but we want to go further to reduce human suffering. Today’s airdrop has provided a further way to deliver humanitarian support,”

he remarked, expressing gratitude towards RAF personnel and Jordanian partners for their pivotal roles in this essential mission.

The aftermath of the October 7th Hamas attack has been devastating, with innocent lives lost and widespread suffering. The UK’s strategy is clear – to employ every possible avenue to deliver life-saving aid, be it by air, land, or potentially by sea.

This approach also includes calls for Israel to provide port access and open more land crossings to facilitate the influx of aid into Gaza.

A Testament to Capability and Compassion

The RAF A400M, known for its tactical and strategic airlift capabilities, was chosen for this mission. This operation marked its first foray into delivering humanitarian aid by parachute, demonstrating both the aircraft’s versatility and the UK’s innovative approach to aid delivery.

RAF and British Army personnel played integral roles in ensuring the aid reached civilians directly, with drop zones meticulously surveyed to maximize the effectiveness of the airdrop.

Beyond the Airdrop: A Continuum of Care

This airdrop is a part of the UK’s ongoing efforts to provide life-saving humanitarian assistance to the people of Gaza.

Recent actions include land deliveries of 2,000 tonnes of food aid, the provision of UK-funded blankets, tents, and other relief items, and the establishment of a UK-funded field hospital operated by British charity UK-Med.

The UK’s role in international humanitarian efforts is not new. It has supported airdrops in collaboration with Jordan and Bahrain, delivering critical aid and supplies to regions in dire need.

The RAF’s delivery of aid to Egypt for distribution by the Egyptian Red Crescent and UNRWA between October and November 2023 exemplifies the UK’s commitment to supporting international humanitarian efforts.

The Path Forward

As the UK continues to work with allies to open direct maritime corridors to Gaza and ensure more aid can enter by land, it remains committed to the humanitarian cause.

Last week’s distribution of more than 2,000 tonnes of food aid by the World Food Programme, complemented by 150 tonnes of UK-funded relief items, underscores the breadth of the UK’s humanitarian response.

In addition to these efforts, the UK has announced a further £10 million in aid funding for the Occupied Palestinian Territories, bringing the total spend to over £100 million this financial year.

This funding will support UN agencies on the ground to deliver lifesaving aid and provide core relief items to the most vulnerable populations.
