The UK is spearheading the development of major solar energy projects and wind farms across the Philippines. This initiative underscores the UK’s commitment to global sustainability and its role in helping emerging markets achieve their green energy targets.

UK-Philippines Renewable Energy Partnership

The UK’s involvement in the Philippines’ renewable energy sector is part of a broader strategy to reduce global reliance on fossil fuels.

His Majesty’s Ambassador to the Philippines, Laure Beaufils, said

“The United Kingdom is proud to be a partner in the Philippines’ renewable energy journey. These investments reflect our shared vision for a sustainable future and underscore the strong ties between our two nations.

Projects like these not only provide clean energy to millions but also create opportunities for innovation and progress in the fight against climate change.”

This partnership is expected to leverage UK expertise, particularly in offshore wind, to drive the Philippines’ energy transition.

Large-Scale Solar and Wind Projects

One of the most significant investments is in Citicore Renewable Energy Corporation (CREC), where the UK’s MOBILIST programme has backed an initial public offering (IPO) valued at approximately $86 million.

This investment will fund the development of CREC’s solar power plants and battery energy storage systems, aiming to add about 1 gigawatt of solar energy capacity per year over the next five years[2].

Additionally, Mainstream Renewable Power has secured development rights for two onshore wind farms with a combined capacity of 440 megawatts. The Philippines will commence construction on these projects, located in Cagayan Province and Leyte Province, significantly boosting the country’s renewable energy mix.

Employment and Energy Security

The development of these renewable energy projects is not only about reducing carbon emissions but also about creating employment and livelihood opportunities for the local population.

Energy Secretary Raphael P.M. Lotilla emphasized that these projects will bring in financial and technological resources, leading to more employment and economic growth in the regions where the projects are located.

Accelerated Green Transition

The Philippine government aims to increase the share of renewable energy in the power generation mix to 35% by 2030 and 50% by 2040.

The Green Lane Certification, recently granted to Copenhagen Energy for its BuhaWind projects, is a key initiative to streamline procedures and accelerate the development of critical renewable energy infrastructure.

This certification is expected to attract more international investments and support the country’s sustainability goals.

Initiative or Solution Overview

The UK’s investment through the MOBILIST programme is part of the British Investment Partnership (BIP), which aims to deliver finance and technical assistance for infrastructure development and green transition in the Philippines.

This includes backing investments in hydro, solar, and biomass projects, with a total of £32 million invested in hydro and solar projects and $350 million in biomass.

The expected outcomes of these projects are substantial. CREC’s solar and wind projects are estimated to reduce carbon emissions by approximately 3.3 million tons over the next three years.

Additionally, the development of these renewable energy sources will provide reliable and affordable energy, supporting the Philippines’ economic growth and industrial development.

Future Steps

The implementation of these projects is already underway, with early-stage development activities commenced for the wind farms and solar plants. The UK and the Philippines are working closely to ensure a smooth transition, with the UK providing expertise and the Philippines offering conducive investment conditions.

The next steps include the completion of the solar plants and the commencement of full-scale construction on the wind projects.

The Way Ahead

The UK’s investment in solar energy and wind farms in the Philippines marks a significant milestone in the country’s journey towards a cleaner, more sustainable energy future.

As the Philippines continues to transition away from fossil fuels, these projects will play a crucial role in ensuring reliable, affordable, and clean energy for its growing population.

The partnership between the UK and the Philippines serves as a model for international cooperation in achieving global sustainability goals.
