The Marine Management Organisation (MMO) has announced a significant delay in the publication of the UK Sea Fisheries Statistics 2023, citing critical data quality concerns. This move is part of a broader effort to maintain the integrity and accuracy of fisheries data, a crucial aspect for the UK’s fishing industry.

Data Quality Concerns and Delay

The MMO has identified substantial issues related to landings data, prompting a thorough investigation and subsequent revisions to several statistical releases. The Marine Management Organisation (MMO) has pushed back the initial release date from 26 September 2024 to November 2024, pending confirmation.

“Maintaining the integrity and accuracy of fisheries data is of utmost importance,” stated the MMO. “We appreciate the understanding and patience of all users affected by this delay.”

Impact on Statistics

The primary impact of these corrections will be on tables involving landing weight (both live and landed), with potential subsequent updates to effort and trade statistics.

Reasons Behind the Corrections

The need for corrections arises from the identification of significant data discrepancies. To address this issue, the MMO and UK Fisheries Authorities are working diligently to rectify these problems and ensure the accuracy of the statistics.
Meanwhile, a broader examination of the industry reveals that over the past three decades, the UK fishing fleet has undergone significant changes. Notably, the number of UK fishing vessels has decreased substantially, dropping by 52% from over 11,000 vessels to approximately 5,500.
  • Fleet Capacity Reductions: National and international policies have led to fleet capacity reductions through decommissioning exercises and greater controls on fishing opportunities.
  • Shift to Larger Vessels: The transition to fewer but larger vessels has reduced the number of jobs in the catching sector, as larger vessels require fewer crew members.

Sector-Specific Impacts

The corrections will affect various sectors within the UK fishing industry differently:

  • Demersal Fish: Landings of demersal fish, such as cod and haddock, have been declining due to reduced fishing opportunities and fleet size reductions.
  • Pelagic and Shellfish: Pelagic species saw an increase in landings and value in 2021, while shellfish landings and value also rebounded after the COVID-19 lockdowns.

Changes

  • Delayed Release: The 2023 statistics release is now scheduled for November 2024.
  • Data Revisions: Significant revisions to landing weight statistics and potential updates to effort and trade statistics.
  • Investigation: Ongoing investigation by the MMO and UK Fisheries Authorities to address data quality issues.
  • Impact on Sectors: Demersal, pelagic, and shellfish sectors will be affected differently by the corrections.

In Summary

The MMO’s decision to delay and correct the UK Sea Fisheries Statistics underscores the commitment to data integrity and accuracy. Consequently, this move demonstrates the organization’s dedication to providing reliable information.

Moreover, as the UK fishing industry continues to evolve under national and international regulations, these corrections are crucial for informed decision-making and sustainable fishing practices. In fact, accurate data is essential for the industry’s long-term sustainability, and the MMO’s efforts will ultimately benefit the entire sector.

This delay, though inconvenient, ensures that stakeholders have reliable data to navigate the complex landscape of UK fisheries.
