In a significant move, the UK has welcomed the appointment of Prime Minister Garry Conille to lead Haiti’s Transitional Government. Ambassador James Kariuki, the UK Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, highlighted this development during the UN Security Council meeting on Haiti.

The UK remains committed to supporting Haiti through financial aid, diplomatic backing, and efforts to promote inclusive governance and security.

The UK’s Statement at the UN Security Council

Ambassador James Kariuki’s address at the UN Security Council underscored the UK’s steadfast support for Haiti during this critical period.

He praised the recent arrival of members of the Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS) in Haiti, led by Kenya, and emphasized the UK’s pledge of over $6 million to assist the mission.

Kariuki’s statement highlighted the dire conditions in Haiti, where schools are closed, hospitals lack supplies, and food access is severely limited.

“The crisis in Haiti has affected the lives of Haitians for far too long. Schools are closed, hospitals have run out of supplies, and access to food is severely limited,” Kariuki stated. “We commend the recent arrival of members of the Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS) to Haiti and pay tribute to Kenya’s leadership of this mission. The mission remains vital to supporting Haitian efforts to resolve instability.”

UK’s Support for Haiti’s Transitional Government

The appointment of Prime Minister Garry Conille and his cabinet to lead the Transitional Government is seen as a crucial step towards stability. The UK has expressed strong support for Conille’s leadership, urging Haitian political and civil society to seize this opportunity to address the root causes of the security crisis. The UK’s backing includes financial aid, with over $6 million pledged to support the MSS mission.

Main Areas of UK Support

  • Financial Aid: The UK has pledged over $6 million to support Haiti’s Transitional Government and the MSS mission.
  • Diplomatic Support: The UK has expressed its support for Prime Minister Conille at the UN Security Council.
  • Inclusive Governance: Encouraging active participation from women and youth to address Haiti’s security crisis.
  • Promoting Democratic Processes: Emphasizing the importance of free and fair elections in Haiti.
  • Addressing Security Challenges: Supporting international efforts to assist Haiti in tackling security issues.

BINUH’s Mandate Renewal and the Role of MSS

As the UN Security Council considers the renewal of the mandate for the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH), the UK has reiterated its full support for the Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) and the mission.

The coordination between BINUH and the MSS mission is vital for the stability and security of Haiti.

“Prime Minister, you have our support in this vital task,” Kariuki affirmed. “The UK’s full support to the SRSG and the mission remains steadfast. BINUH will continue to play an important role in supporting the Transitional Government, coordinated with the MSS mission.”

International Community’s Role in Haiti’s Stability

Kariuki emphasized the importance of the international community’s support for Haiti’s Transitional Government. He urged global partners to back Haiti’s efforts to achieve lasting stability and security, which the Haitian people desperately need and deserve.

The UK’s involvement, along with the leadership of the MSS mission by Kenya, aims to create positive momentum in Haiti.
