A U.S. Defense Department delegation is set to hold high-level talks with Chinese military officials in Beijing this week. Led by Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense Michael S. Chase, the delegation will also attend the Xiangshan security forum.

These talks aim to reaffirm the United States’ commitment to peace in the Indo-Pacific while addressing concerns over China’s growing influence in the region.

Strengthening Dialogue for Regional Security

The delegation’s visit is part of a broader effort to maintain open communication with China amidst growing tensions. As the U.S. and China continue to engage in an “intensely competitive relationship,” these discussions offer an opportunity for candid dialogue on pressing security issues.

Since military-to-military talks resumed in January, both nations have been working to manage their differences without escalating into conflict.

At the center of these discussions is the Indo-Pacific region, where the U.S. remains a key player in promoting stability. The Xiangshan forum serves as a platform for defense officials to interact with regional allies and partners, reinforcing the shared values of freedom, transparency, and peaceful conflict resolution.

This forum provides a unique opportunity for the U.S. to strengthen ties and ensure collective security in the region.

Xiangshan Forum and Defense Policy Talks

The Xiangshan forum, one of Asia’s premier security summits, offers a crucial platform for dialogue. The U.S. delegation’s participation signals its ongoing commitment to regional peace and cooperation.

On the sidelines of the forum, the delegation will hold informal talks with regional partners, reiterating the U.S.’s long-standing commitment to:

  • Respecting sovereignty and international law
  • Promoting freedom of navigation and equal rights for all states

Following the forum, Michael S. Chase will lead the 18th iteration of the U.S.-China Defense Policy Coordination Talks. These talks were resumed after President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping reached an agreement in November of last year.

Since their resumption, the discussions have focused on managing competition responsibly, particularly in areas like the South China Sea, where disputes are frequent.

Managing Tensions Through Dialogue

Despite the competitive nature of U.S.-China relations, both countries recognize the importance of maintaining open lines of communication. The talks in Beijing will address several U.S. concerns, particularly China’s increasing military activity in the Indo-Pacific.

A senior U.S. defense official remarked that,

“This is an intensely competitive relationship, but we are committed to managing that competition responsibly and preventing it from veering into conflict.”

The stakes in these discussions are high, as the region has seen growing tensions around key flashpoints such as Taiwan and the South China Sea. By focusing on diplomacy and fostering communication, the U.S. aims to prevent unnecessary escalations and promote a peaceful approach to resolving differences.

Looking Ahead

As the U.S. delegation prepares to meet its Chinese counterparts, the world watches closely. The outcomes of these talks may not only influence U.S.-China relations but could also shape the future security landscape of the Indo-Pacific region.

By engaging in these discussions, the U.S. reiterates its commitment to peace, diplomacy, and maintaining a stable, rules-based order.

The U.S. Department of Defense’s ongoing engagement in military talks with China highlights its strategy of balancing competition with cooperation, ensuring that both nations can work together to prevent conflict while safeguarding their respective interests.
