On World Teachers’ Day, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau took a moment to reflect on the invaluable contributions teachers make to society.

In a statement issued from Ottawa, he praised educators for their unwavering dedication to shaping the next generation and highlighted the federal government’s initiatives that support teachers and students across Canada.

With programs like CanCode and the National School Food Program, Trudeau reaffirmed the government’s commitment to empowering both educators and learners.

Honoring the Role of Teachers in Canada

Teachers in Canada play a critical role in nurturing students’ curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking skills. From the classroom to extracurricular activities, teachers are the backbone of Canada’s educational system.

Trudeau emphasized the importance of teachers by saying,

“They help us learn and grow, and they’re our guides when we need that extra push to succeed.”

This year’s theme for World Teachers’ Day, “Valuing teachers’ voices: towards a new social contract for education,” reflects the vital role educators play in shaping the future.

The Prime Minister recognized the efforts of teachers not only within Canadian classrooms but also in the broader context of global education, referencing initiatives such as the Global Partnership for Education and Canada’s work toward the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Federal Support for Education

In addition to expressing gratitude, Trudeau outlined several government initiatives designed to support both teachers and students across the country:

  • Prime Minister’s Awards for Teaching Excellence: These prestigious awards honor outstanding educators who make a lasting impact on their students. Canadians are encouraged to nominate exceptional teachers for the 2025 awards.
  • CanCode Program: This program provides professional development opportunities for 100,000 teachers and helps over nine million students develop critical skills in areas such as coding and artificial intelligence.
  • National School Food Program: This new initiative aims to provide healthy meals to up to 400,000 students, ensuring that children can focus on learning without the distraction of hunger.

Trudeau stressed that these programs reflect the government’s dedication to ensuring that teachers have the tools and resources they need to succeed, both inside and outside the classroom.

Celebrating Teachers on a Global Scale

Beyond national borders, Trudeau’s statement also acknowledged Canada’s role in promoting education internationally. Through the Simameni Project, Canada is increasing access to quality education in low-income and crisis-affected countries.

These efforts align with the United Nations’ 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, which aim to make education more inclusive worldwide.

Local School Celebrations on World Teachers’ Day

Schools across Canada hold various activities to celebrate World Teachers’ Day, showing appreciation for educators at a local level. Typical events include:

  • Special Assemblies: Students and administrators give speeches and presentations to honor teachers.
  • Student-Led Events: From appreciation breakfasts to thank-you cards, students organize activities to express their gratitude.
  • Social Media Campaigns: Many schools encourage students to share messages of appreciation using hashtags like #WorldTeachersDay.

In Ontario, the OTIP Teaching Awards highlight the importance of recognizing outstanding teachers. These awards cover three categories—elementary, secondary, and beginning teachers.

Winners, such as Sierra Miller and Lara Gudelj, receive both recognition and a monetary prize, spotlighting their dedication to their students and schools.

The Takeaway

Today and every day, Canadians are encouraged to show their gratitude to the dedicated individuals who work tirelessly to shape future generations.
