The UK government has announced over £1 billion in Bus funding for England to address long-standing disparities in public transport. The initiative, confirmed by Transport Secretary Louise Haigh, promises to lower fares, safeguard vital routes, and create more reliable, equitable services for urban and rural areas alike.

Historic Funding Allocation: Breaking the Postcode Lottery

A Record Investment:

This £955 million funding package represents the largest government support for buses in recent years. The allocation includes:

  • £712 million for local authorities to enhance routes and services.
  • £243 million to bus operators, ensuring fare affordability and service frequency.

Key regions such as Leicester, the Isle of Wight, and Torbay are among those receiving unprecedented funding to improve service quality and coverage.

Ending Regional Disparities:

Historically underserved areas, including small towns and rural communities, will see significant improvements. Funds are now distributed based on need, deprivation levels, and population, eliminating the competitive bidding that previously delayed decisions and wasted resources.

What Passengers Can Expect

Improved Access and Reliability:

The reforms aim to tackle inconsistent funding and poor service reliability that have long frustrated passengers. Outcomes include:

  • Better punctuality and frequency for popular routes.
  • Continuation of lifeline services connecting towns, hospitals, and rural areas.
  • Enhanced access for commuters, students, and communities.

Affordable Fares:

The funding includes support for the £2 fare cap on single bus journeys, now extended to December 2025, helping millions of passengers save on travel costs.

Driving Economic Growth and Social Mobility

Buses play a crucial role in local economies, transporting 10 million passengers daily. This investment empowers communities to access jobs, education, and healthcare while boosting tourism and social activities.

Improved bus services are expected to yield long-term benefits, including a £4 return for every £1 invested in public transport.

Government’s Commitment to Reform

The funding is part of broader reforms, including the introduction of the Buses Bill, which will grant local councils greater control over transport decisions. The goal: to deliver London-style networks tailored to the needs of individual communities.

A Better Future for England’s Buses

The UK government’s £1 billion funding injection marks a significant step toward building a more accessible, affordable, and sustainable public transport system.

As Louise Haigh emphasized,

“By delivering better buses, we’ll ensure people have proper access to jobs and opportunities – powering economic growth in every corner of the country.”

This initiative not only addresses current challenges but sets a promising foundation for equitable and efficient transport across England.
