The Japanese government imposed strict martial law over Davao City that limited civil liberties and severely restricted freedom of movement for citizens.
The occupation forces imposed harsh restrictions on local residents, including curfews and searches, and took many into custody or deported them without cause. Furthermore, the occupation forces severely rationed food, requisitioning local produce and causing scarcity.
The healthcare system also suffered with poor nutrition leading to an increase in disease and death among the population. Many civilians found themselves unable to access medical care or other basic necessities due to the policies imposed by the Japanese imperial forces.
Post-War Era
The people of Davao drastically transformed their city after World War II. Before the war, Davao was a small and tranquil city with little industrialization. In 1945, the Japanese forces withdrew from Davao, and the Davaoenos seized the opportunity to rebuild their city and pave the way for a prosperous future.
The founders of Ateneo de Davao University began constructing the university’s main campus in 1948. Meanwhile, the city’s leaders and developers established numerous infrastructures, including roads, airports, shopping malls, and power plants, during this period of restoration.
Economic reform programs relating to agricultural production, education, transportation, and tourism followed suit over the coming decades.
This allowing Davao City to fully recover from wartime devastation and develop into one of the leading cities in Mindanao.
