Boosting Research Collaboration to Tackle Global Challenges

A New Era of UK-SA Research Collaboration

The UK has announced a significant investment of up to R1 billion (£50 million) in the International Science Partnership Fund to enhance UK-South Africa science and research collaboration. Announced by the British High Commissioner in Pretoria, this funding marks a new chapter in joint efforts to address pressing global challenges through scientific innovation.

A Reception of High Esteem

The announcement was made at a reception attended by notable figures including Minister of Science and Innovation, Blade Nzimande, and His Royal Highness Prince Edward The Duke of Edinburgh. This event underscores the importance of international collaboration in advancing scientific research and development.

Minister Nzimande’s Endorsement

Emphasizing the significance of the partnership, Minister Nzimande expressed South Africa’s enthusiasm for the Fund. He highlighted the importance of co-ownership and co-responsibility in ensuring alignment with national priorities, especially in projects like the Square Kilometre Array Observatory for radio astronomy in Africa.

UK High Commissioner’s Vision

UK High Commissioner Antony Phillipson stressed the necessity of collaborative efforts in science, research, and innovation to make rapid progress against global challenges like climate change. He praised the existing partnership with South Africa’s Department of Science and Innovation, looking forward to amplifying the impact of these science partnerships.

Decades of Joint Efforts

UK and South African researchers have long collaborated on projects addressing global issues, such as developing weather warning systems. These systems provide vital information to South African communities, safeguarding lives and livelihoods.

Investment Focus Areas

The new investment aims to further strengthen UK and South Africa’s research partnerships. Key focus areas include:

  • Addressing non-communicable diseases by connecting medical experts.
  • Tackling unemployment and fostering economic growth through nurturing young researchers.
  • Facilitating partnerships in sustainable development goals.
  • Enhancing understanding and responses to climate change impacts.
  • Supporting robust research and innovation systems for economic development.

Enhancing Science and Technology Partnerships

The partnership extends beyond research to include initiatives like the Royal Academy of Engineering’s Transforming Systems through Partnerships program and the Leaders in Innovation Fellowships, working with South Africa’s Technology Innovation Agency. These programs aim to catalyze partnerships and drive innovation in critical sectors.

Commitment to Long-term Collaboration

Reflecting a strong, ongoing partnership, the UK and South Africa signed a Memorandum of Understanding during the State Visit in November 2022. This agreement promises further collaboration in emerging technologies, health, oceans, climate, energy, and space sectors.

A Pledge for Future Prosperity

This new funding from the UK consolidates its commitment to working in partnership with South Africa. Furthermore, it aims to deliver on mutually agreed priorities and address challenges at global, regional, and local levels. This collaborative effort is aimed at fostering a future of shared prosperity and scientific advancement, strengthening the bonds between the two nations.
