What drives over 93,000 Iloilo learners to sign up for the Department of Education (DepEd) learning camp? The voluntary initiative aims to bridge learning gaps and enhance student capacities, preparing them for the upcoming school year.

National Learning Camp: An Overview

Dr. Ernesto Servillon Jr., Iloilo Schools Division Superintendent, emphasized the voluntary nature of the camp for both students and teachers.

“This is to reinforce, or as an enrichment activity of their learning in the previous school year and bridge the gap for others,”

he explained during a recent interview.

The learning camp, set for July, focuses on key subjects:

  • English, Math, and Science for Grades 7 to 10
  • Reading and Math for Grades 1 to 3

Participants are divided into three categories based on their needs:

  1. Enhancement Camp: For advanced learners.
  2. Consolidation Camp: For those needing more practice in previously learned competencies.
  3. Intervention Camp: For learners needing foundational support.

Enrollment and Participation

As of Friday afternoon, the data shows:

  • Enhancement Camp: 8,008 learners
  • Consolidation Camp: 26,659 learners
  • Intervention Camp: 58,773 learners

A total of 740 schools are participating in this year’s learning camp, a significant increase from last year’s 41,483 participants.

“We have more enrollees this year because we really prepared for this,”

Servillon remarked.

Impact on Student Performance

Improved Literacy and Numeracy

A study published in the International Multidisciplinary Journal of Research for Innovation, Sustainability, and Excellence (IMJRISE) highlighted the effectiveness of the National Learning Camp (NLC) in improving literacy and numeracy among Grade 7 learners. The study found a significant improvement in both areas after attending the camp, underscoring its role in enhancing crucial competencies.

Positive Learning Outcomes

Another study in the World Journal of Advanced Research and Reviews analyzed experiences from teacher volunteers and learner participants, reporting predominantly positive outcomes:

  • Improved understanding of subject matter
  • Increased motivation and enthusiasm for learning
  • Development of teamwork and collaboration skills
  • Enhanced communication skills

However, some participants noted varying degrees of improvement in critical thinking skills, suggesting areas for further development.

Areas for Improvement

While the NLC has shown considerable positive impacts, certain challenges remain. Issues such as learning environment, content relevance, teaching methodologies, and logistical concerns have been noted. Addressing these areas could enhance the program’s overall effectiveness.

The Breakdown

The DepEd learning camp in Iloilo, with its impressive enrollment numbers and structured approach, is poised to make a significant difference in bridging educational gaps and boosting student performance. With continuous improvements and dedicated participation, the program holds promise for a brighter academic future for many learners.

By focusing on addressing the challenges and building on its successes, the National Learning Camp can continue to be a vital resource for students in Iloilo and beyond, fostering a more equitable and effective educational landscape.
