In a heartwarming act of solidarity and support, the Malaysian government and the renowned book retailer Big Bad Wolf Books have extended their hands across the sea to Marawi City, Lanao del Sur, donating more than 1,000 books to the city’s schoolchildren. This generous initiative aims to foster good relations between Malaysia and the Philippines and significantly boost literacy rates among the youth of Mindanao.

Malaysian Ambassador Dato Abdul Malik Melvin Castelino emphasized the initiative’s role in strengthening bilateral ties. Moreover, he highlighted its focus on educational enrichment in Mindanao.
With the symbolic turnover of books to the Mindanao State University’s King Faisal Center for Islamic, Arabic, and Asian Studies, hopes are high for the expansion of this project to encompass more schools across Mindanao.
Engaging the Community
The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has joined forces in this noble cause, identifying schools and children in Lanao del Sur who are most in need of educational support. DSWD Undersecretary Fatimah Aliah Dimaporo highlighted the plight of many children in the province, particularly orphans housed in boarding schools known as “torils,” who rely heavily on private donations for educational materials.
