A Leap Towards Sustainability

In the picturesque Barangay Dewey of Bolinao town, Pangasinan, a groundbreaking solar-powered water system has emerged as a lifeline for its 2,500 residents. Supported by the General Appropriations Act of 2023, this PHP9.8 million initiative signifies a monumental step towards ensuring clean and accessible water for the community and potentially, its neighbors in Santiago Island.

Moreover, it represents a significant milestone in addressing water accessibility and sustainability in the region.

Harnessing the Sun for Water

Project engineer Sally Ignacio, from Pangasinan’s 1st Engineering District Office, shared insights into the innovative project. With a capacity to store 20,000 liters and powered by a 24-panel solar array, this system taps into the earth’s natural resources, providing a sustainable alternative to the traditional deep wells and private water supplies previously relied upon by the islanders.

Transforming Lives and Livelihoods

For years, the residents of Barangay Dewey had to depend on inconsistent water sources. This solar-powered system not only promises a steady supply of water but also paves the way for extending such benefits to surrounding villages, subject to local government decisions.

The initiative is a testament to the power of renewable energy in transforming communities, marked by a significant turnover ceremony on February 1.

A Community Empowered

The project’s completion heralds a new era of empowerment for Barangay Dewey. With the Department of Public Works and Highways handing over management to the local government unit, this collaborative effort between national and local authorities ensures that the benefits of this project will be felt widely and managed efficiently. Moreover, Economic and Environmental Wins are anticipated.

Economic and Environmental Wins

Residents like Apple Reoligio anticipate a dual boon from this project. They expect reduced water bills and a lesser environmental footprint. Additionally, this sentiment echoes the broader community’s excitement and gratitude for a project that aligns economic savings with sustainable development.
