Can the inclusion of Siquijor in the Negros Island Region (NIR) truly bring transformative change? Lawmakers behind the Republic Act No. 12000 believe so.

Negrense legislators have assured Siquijodnons that their province will not be left behind once the new administrative region becomes fully operational by 2025.

Legislators’ Promises

Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri and Negros Occidental Sixth District Representative Mercedes Alvarez recently addressed concerns at a press conference in Bacolod City. They acknowledged the hesitations of some Siquijor residents but emphasized the significant benefits that come with the NIR.

Senator Zubiri’s Assurance

“There is no reason to oppose,”

stated Zubiri, who co-sponsored Senate Bill 2507.

He highlighted the convenience for Siquijodnons who will now only need to travel 20 minutes to Dumaguete City to access regional offices. This proximity to vital services is a stark improvement from the long and hazardous journey to Cebu City.

Rep. Alvarez’s Commitment

Alvarez echoed Zubiri’s sentiments, reinforcing that no province under the NIR will be left behind. She emphasized the equitable attention and resources the national government plans to allocate, ensuring all included provinces receive the support they need.

Benefits for Siquijor

The NIR Act, signed into law on June 13 by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., aims to decentralize administration, enhance local autonomy, and accelerate regional development. Here’s how Siquijor stands to gain:

Improved Access to Services

  • Regional Offices in Dumaguete: Key departments such as the Department of Education, Department of Health, and Department of Social Welfare and Development will set up regional offices in Dumaguete City. This move significantly shortens the travel time for Siquijodnons.

Economic and Infrastructure Development

  • Increased Funding: With the new administrative region, Siquijor is poised to receive more funding for development projects, which could lead to enhanced infrastructure and economic growth.
  • Livelihood Projects: Proximity to Dumaguete City means easier access to top-tier departments, bringing livelihood projects and programs within reach.

Cultural and Integrated Development

  • Cultural Development: The unification of Negros and Siquijor rekindles shared history, promoting cultural development.
  • Integrated Planning: The NIR facilitates cohesive and inclusive development planning, promising resilient and sustainable progress for Siquijor.

Addressing Concerns

Despite the promising outlook, some Siquijodnons remain skeptical due to a lack of consultation and cultural differences. Lawmakers are appealing for patience and open-mindedness, ensuring that the NIR’s implementation will address these concerns effectively.

President Marcos Jr.’s Vision

President Marcos Jr. envisions the NIR as a “bulwark of greater growth” and a “conduit” for efficient service delivery. He expressed confidence in the region’s potential for unity and prosperity, urging the people to work together to leverage each other’s strengths.

The Final Word

Siquijor’s inclusion in the Negros Island Region marks a new chapter of opportunity and growth.

With the backing of dedicated lawmakers and the promise of equitable development, Siquijodnons have every reason to look forward to a brighter future.
