The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate (S&T) is introducing the C-THRU device, an innovative fire safety tool, for real-world testing across U.S. fire departments.

Developed by Qwake Technologies, this helmet-mounted device promises to revolutionize firefighter safety and effectiveness.

Program Details

The C-THRU device, developed by Austin-based Qwake Technologies, is a groundbreaking helmet-mounted tool designed to improve situational awareness for firefighters. This state-of-the-art device includes a high-speed thermal camera, artificial intelligence capabilities, and real-time navigation.

With a $4.7 million funding award from DHS S&T, 400 C-THRU devices will be produced and distributed for testing.

Key Features of the C-THRU Device:

  • Enhanced Vision: The device uses thermal imaging to provide firefighters with clear visibility in smoke-filled environments.
  • Directional Guidance: AI-driven navigation aids firefighters in locating exits and navigating around obstacles.
  • Real-Time Support: The thermal camera livestreams a firefighter’s line of vision to incident commanders, allowing for real-time support and post-incident review.

C-THRU Device Capabilities

The C-THRU device enhances firefighters’ ability to operate in dark, smoke-filled environments. Its hands-free design includes a lightweight, balanced helmet-mounted system equipped with a high-speed thermal camera.

This technology captures the surroundings and uses AI to process the images, offering enhanced vision and guidance.

Additionally, the device can identify walls, furniture, and other obstacles, ensuring firefighters can navigate safely and efficiently.

Description

Thermal Imaging Provides clear visibility in smoke-filled environments
AI Navigation Guides firefighters to exits and around obstacles
Real-Time Livestream Shares vision with incident commanders for support
Hands-Free Design Lightweight and balanced for ease of use
Mayday Function Alerts nearby C-THRU users in case of emergency

Testing and Implementation

The nationwide testing initiative will involve fire departments of various sizes and mission sets. By July 31, 2024, interested departments can apply to participate in this program.

The goal is to gather data from diverse firefighting environments to refine and optimize the device for real-world applications.

Benefits of Participating in the Testing Program:

  • Operational Insights: Fire departments can define their own use and training standards for the C-THRU device.
  • Product Feedback: Direct feedback will inform product refinement and ensure the device meets firefighters’ needs.

Expert Insights

Dr. Dimitri Kusnezov, DHS Under Secretary for Science and Technology, emphasized the importance of this collaboration:

“Improved equipment and technology for first responders will help save lives and protect firefighters. Through partnerships with industry, we support the development of devices like C-THRU to meet urgent needs.”

Participating fire departments have already reported significant benefits. Firefighter teams highlighted the device’s ability to enhance situational awareness and streamline communication between team members and incident commanders.

Future Prospects

With the successful implementation of this testing program, the C-THRU device is expected to enter commercial release. Long-term, this technology promises to greatly enhance firefighting operations, making them safer and more efficient.

The partnership between DHS S&T and Qwake Technologies marks a significant advancement in fire safety technology.

As C-THRU devices become a standard tool in firefighting, the potential for saving lives and reducing risks will only grow.

Final Thoughts

The introduction of the C-THRU device is a pivotal moment for fire safety technology. By improving visibility, navigation, and real-time support, this innovative tool addresses critical challenges faced by firefighters.

As real-world testing progresses, the insights gained will ensure the device meets the rigorous demands of firefighting, ultimately enhancing the safety and effectiveness of fire departments across the nation.

This initiative not only demonstrates the power of technological innovation but also the importance of collaboration between government and industry to protect those who risk their lives to save others.

Fire departments interested in participating should contact [email protected]. Applications are due July 31, 2024.
