American soldiers from the U.S. military’s premier chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosives (CBRNE) command joined Mexican troops in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, from June 24-28, 2024.

This annual Exercise Fuerzas Amigas aimed to enhance military cooperation and readiness between the two nations.

Strengthening Military Partnerships

Exercise Fuerzas Amigas, an annual bilateral military exercise, saw the participation of approximately 220 U.S. troops and 300 Mexican Armed Forces members.

The primary objective was to fortify the military-to-military partnership between the U.S. and Mexico, fostering collaboration through joint training activities.

 

Objectives and Significance

The exercise aimed to enhance the operational capabilities of both nations through a series of coordinated activities. These activities included command and control synchronization, chemical decontamination procedures, mass casualty triage, evacuation drills, and search and rescue training. By working together in these critical areas, both armies improved their readiness to respond to various threats.

U.S. Army North’s Role

U.S. Army North served as the Joint Force Land Component Command, maintaining operational control of the exercise. As part of U.S. Northern Command, U.S. Army North conducts defense and security cooperation activities to enhance readiness and deter strategic competitors.

U.S. Army North’s Responsibilities:

  • Overseeing the operational aspects of the exercise
  • Coordinating with Mexican counterparts
  • Ensuring seamless execution of all training activities

 

CBRNE Command Participation

The 172nd Chemical Company, based in Fort Riley, Kansas, played a pivotal role in the exercise. These soldiers specialize in handling chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive threats.

They supported various training activities, showcasing their expertise and enhancing the overall effectiveness of the exercise.

CBRNE Command Activities:

  • Chemical decontamination procedures
  • Reconnaissance and surveillance operations
  • Decontamination support for civil authorities

 

Importance of the 20th CBRNE Command

The 20th CBRNE Command, headquartered at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland, is the U.S. Army’s leading unit for addressing CBRNE threats.

With 75% of the active-duty U.S. Army’s explosive ordnance disposal technicians and CBRN specialists, the 20th CBRNE Command plays a critical role in both domestic and international operations.

20th CBRNE Command Units:

  • 1st Area Medical Laboratory
  • CBRNE Analytical and Remediation Activity
  • Five weapons of mass destruction coordination teams
  • Three nuclear disablement teams
