Recently, the Honourable Ahmed Hussen, Minister of International Development, represented Canada at the G20 Development Ministerial Meeting in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

This meeting, themed “Building a Just World and a Sustainable Planet,” provided a platform for discussing critical global challenges, including poverty, gender inequality, and sustainable development.

Minister Hussen’s Engagement at the G20

Minister Hussen’s participation in the G20 Development Ministerial Meeting underscored Canada’s leadership in promoting equitable development.

The meeting, held from July 22 to 25, 2024, brought together leaders from the world’s major economies to discuss strategies for reducing global inequalities.

Minister Hussen emphasized Canada’s Feminist International Assistance Policy, highlighting the importance of gender equality in achieving sustainable development goals.

Discussions and Outcomes

The G20 forum allowed Minister Hussen to engage in high-level discussions, particularly on:

  • Poverty Reduction: Addressing the root causes of poverty and promoting inclusive growth.
  • Gender Equality: Advocating for policies that empower women and girls.
  • Climate Action: Emphasizing the need for collective action to combat climate change.

The meeting also featured a joint session of development and finance ministers, led by Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Here, the focus was on the establishment of the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, set to launch at the G20 Leaders’ Summit in November 2024.

Minister Hussen shared Canada’s initiatives in fighting hunger and malnutrition, reinforcing Canada’s role in this global effort.

Bilateral Discussions and Broader Implications

Beyond the formal G20 agenda, Minister Hussen engaged in bilateral discussions with counterparts from other nations. These conversations explored avenues for enhanced collaboration towards the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

By strengthening partnerships, Canada aims to accelerate progress on key issues such as health, education, and economic development.

These engagements were crucial in showcasing Canada’s support for initiatives that promote social justice and equality.

This visit underscored the importance of Canada’s role not only in global forums but also in supporting local efforts to achieve sustainable and equitable development.

Canada’s Ongoing Commitment

Canada’s engagement in the G20 Development Ministerial Meeting and the subsequent visit to Salvador reflect a broader commitment to global development and cooperation.

By participating in these high-level discussions, Canada reinforces its dedication to creating a fairer and more sustainable world. The establishment of the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, in particular, illustrates a concrete step towards addressing some of the most urgent issues facing the world today.
