Canada and France’s enduring friendship took center stage this week as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau welcomed French President Emmanuel Macron to Canada.

With a series of joint declarations, the visit underscored both countries’ commitment to a prosperous, secure, and innovative future.

A Strategic Diplomatic Visit

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau hosted President Macron in Canada from September 25 to 26, 2024, marking the French leader’s second visit to the country. The trip, with stops in Ottawa and Montréal, aimed to deepen the longstanding diplomatic ties between Canada and France.

The leaders discussed crucial topics, from defense and security to the growing importance of artificial intelligence (AI) in the global economy.

Outcomes of the Visit

President Macron’s visit resulted in three major declarations that will shape Canada and France’s future collaboration. The discussions focused on several important areas:

  1. Defense and Security
Canada and France reaffirmed their commitment to global security by announcing a stronger partnership in defense, with a particular focus on supporting Ukraine and ensuring regional stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
  2. Climate Action and Ocean Protection
The Canada-France Declaration on the Ocean highlights the critical role oceans play in combating climate change. This agreement also aligns with Canada joining the Paris Pact for People and the Planet, reinforcing both countries’ efforts to protect the environment and drive sustainable development.
  3. Artificial Intelligence (AI) Collaboration
Both countries are global leaders in AI innovation. During the visit, they launched the Canada-France Declaration on Artificial Intelligence, emphasizing the safe and ethical use of AI to promote human rights and democratic values.

Collaborative Initiatives Moving Forward

The outcomes of the visit also touched on future projects, such as Canada’s prominent role in the 2025 Viva Technology Conference in Paris, where Canada was named “Country of the Year.”

This will further boost the country’s AI sector, as Canada’s delegation, led by SCALE AI, will collaborate with international businesses and researchers.

Strengthening Diplomatic and Economic Ties

The strengthened partnership between Canada and France spans a wide range of sectors:

  • Defense: Increased cooperation in defense strategies, including joint efforts in emergency management and military modernization.
  • Trade and Economy: France is Canada’s 12th largest trade partner, with a focus on expanding economic opportunities through innovation and technology.
  • Cultural Relations: Both leaders highlighted the importance of promoting the French language and La Francophonie, further solidifying cultural ties between the two nations.

Additionally, both nations will work closely as they prepare for successive G7 presidencies in 2025 and 2026, allowing them to drive global economic and security agendas forward.

A Lasting Partnership for the Future

In summary, President Macron’s visit to Canada was a pivotal moment in modern Canada-France relations. The agreements made during this diplomatic meeting are poised to foster continued collaboration in defense, environmental protection, and AI innovation.

Canadians can look forward to the benefits of strengthened ties with one of their closest European allies, as both countries work together for a fairer, more prosperous future.

Justin Trudeau said:

“Canada and France’s relationship is built on shared history, a common language, and democratic values. President Macron’s visit to Canada is a testament to the enduring friendship between our two countries, and with the progress we have made over this visit, we will move forward to build a fairer and more prosperous future for our peoples.”

To Conclude

Canada and France have a shared history and common values, and this visit showcased the two countries’ commitment to confronting global challenges together. Moreover, their alliance has been strengthened by mutual interests and collaborative efforts. Consequently, their partnership has become a cornerstone of international cooperation.
The future of their relationship is bright, as they take collective action on the world stage. Furthermore, their shared vision for addressing global issues will continue to foster a spirit of cooperation and solidarity. Surely their commitment to working together will yield tangible results in the years to come.
