As the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah continues to destabilize Lebanon, Canada has stepped up with an urgent response.

With more than 90,000 people displaced since early September, Canada is providing $10 million in humanitarian aid to address the escalating crisis, supporting food, water, and healthcare needs in the region.

Canada’s Commitment to Lebanon’s Humanitarian Crisis

In a statement made by the Honourable Ahmed Hussen, Minister of International Development, Canada reaffirmed its commitment to supporting civilians caught in the middle of Lebanon’s worsening humanitarian crisis.

This $10 million aid package is part of Canada’s broader $37 million contribution for 2024 to help alleviate Lebanon’s urgent humanitarian needs, exacerbated by ongoing regional conflict and a severe economic downturn.

This funding will provide critical services including:

  • Emergency healthcare, including sexual and reproductive health services.
  • Food assistance for populations facing food insecurity.
  • Safe drinking water and sanitation services.
  • Protection services, especially for survivors of gender-based violence.

With this support, Canada hopes to bring some relief to vulnerable communities in Lebanon and continue its efforts to call for an immediate ceasefire along the Lebanon-Israel border.

Humanitarian Needs in Lebanon

Lebanon has been facing an unprecedented crisis, compounded by the 2020 Beirut port explosion, a devastating economic collapse, and the influx of refugees.

The country’s current financial instability has pushed over 1.46 million Lebanese into severe food insecurity, a situation that has worsened due to the conflict.

Canada’s contribution comes at a critical moment to help address the growing humanitarian needs in the region.

According to Minister Hussen,

“With the funding announced today, Canada’s partners will be able to scale up their efforts to help people in urgent need.”

Canada is coordinating its relief efforts with trusted humanitarian organizations such as the World Food Programme (WFP) and the UN Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) to ensure aid reaches those most affected.

Why Canada’s Aid Matters

Canada’s financial support is crucial in Lebanon’s time of need. Here’s why this aid is essential:

  • Addressing Food Insecurity: Thousands of families are struggling with access to basic food supplies.
  • Health Services: The healthcare system in Lebanon is strained, making Canada’s provision of medical services vital.
  • Women’s Protection: Funding will specifically address the safety of women, providing gender-based violence survivors with protection services.

Canada’s response isn’t just about immediate aid but also about laying the groundwork for longer-term recovery.

Canada’s Long-Term Role in Lebanon’s Recovery

While this $10 million package focuses on short-term relief, Canada’s long-term assistance plan includes developmental aid aimed at stabilizing Lebanon’s economy and empowering local communities.

In fact, the broader $37 million commitment for 2024 focuses on economic growth and the empowerment of women-led businesses and agricultural enterprises.

Development Assistance $27 million

In addition to life-saving services, Canada’s aid aims to create resilience within Lebanon’s communities by:

  • Enhancing food security through support for local farmers and agricultural groups.
  • Promoting women-led businesses and their role in Lebanon’s economic recovery.
  • Encouraging women’s participation in politics and decision-making.

Canada’s approach reflects a holistic understanding of the challenges Lebanon faces and highlights a commitment to long-term stability and development.

Canada’s Call for Peace

In a joint statement, both Minister Ahmed Hussen and Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs, have called for a 21-day ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah. This temporary pause would allow humanitarian workers to safely deliver aid and provide space for diplomatic negotiations aimed at achieving a lasting peace.

Canada’s support, both in terms of financial aid and diplomatic efforts, reflects the country’s values of humanitarianism and global peace. As the situation in Lebanon evolves, Canada continues to monitor the crisis closely, working with international partners to ensure help reaches those who need it most.

In times of crisis, Canada has shown its unwavering dedication to assisting vulnerable populations around the world, reinforcing its role as a leader in global humanitarian efforts.

The Takeaway

Canada’s $10 million aid to Lebanon comes at a time of extreme need, precisely when the country requires urgent support. Consequently, with a focus on emergency healthcare, food assistance, and women’s protection, the funding aims to alleviate the immediate impact of Lebanon’s ongoing humanitarian crisis.

Furthermore, this targeted assistance will help bridge the gap between existing resources and the escalating demands of vulnerable populations.

At the same time, Canada’s broader $37 million investment in 2024 addresses long-term recovery and resilience, proving that this support is not just a short-term fix, but a meaningful step toward Lebanon’s sustainable future.
