Bridging the Digital Divide in Phoenix

More than 5,400 Phoenix households are set to receive high-speed internet access as the city secures an $11.8 million Digital Equity Competitive Grant.

The funding will support broadband expansion, digital literacy training, and workforce development programs, ensuring more residents can thrive in the digital age.

Why This Grant Matters

The grant, recommended by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), addresses the growing need for digital access among low-income and underserved communities.

The initiative focuses on providing essential resources, including:

  • High-speed internet for 5,400+ households in affordable and senior housing.
  • Community Wi-Fi serving 1,165 households in the Edison-Eastlake Choice Neighborhoods.
  • Distribution of 700 5G mobile hotspots through local libraries.
  • Broadband career training and digital literacy programs.
  • Telehealth training and virtual reality tools for seniors.

How the Grant Will Be Used

Housing Department: Digital Literacy for Daily Life

Residents in public housing will receive training on using the internet for education, job applications, healthcare, and social connectivity. By improving digital literacy, these initiatives will help families gain independence in a technology-driven world.

Human Services Department: Skills for the Workforce

Job seekers and workers will benefit from broadband career training, equipping them with necessary digital skills. Additionally, seniors will receive training on telehealth services and virtual reality tools to enhance social engagement.

Library Department: Free Internet Access

Libraries will distribute 700 5G mobile hotspots to residents in underserved areas, ensuring access to digital resources and online services.

Digital Equity in Phoenix: The Bigger Picture

Currently, 46% of families in public housing lack high-speed internet access or rely solely on smartphones. This initiative will significantly improve connectivity, helping residents access essential services, job opportunities, and educational resources.

Phoenix’s Success in Securing Funding

Phoenix has a strong track record of securing and managing grant funding for community development projects. Recent successes include:

  • Nearly $185 million invested in capital projects and homeless services over the past four years.
  • Voter-approved 2023 General Obligation Bond Program to support city-led initiatives.
  • Effective management of American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) and Community Development Block Grants.

The Road Ahead

With this funding, Phoenix is taking a significant step toward digital inclusivity. The city’s commitment to expanding broadband access and digital literacy will empower residents, strengthen communities, and ensure that no one is left behind in the digital era.
