The U.S. Department of Defense commemorates National Anthem Day on March 3, celebrating the historical significance of “The Star-Spangled Banner” and its origins during the Battle of Fort McHenry in 1814, a pivotal moment in the War of 1812 that showcased American resilience against British forces.

Historical Significance

The Battle of Fort McHenry was a defining moment in American history. It took place from September 12-14, 1814, during the War of 1812. This battle demonstrated the United States’ ability to withstand foreign aggression.

Francis Scott Key, an American lawyer and amateur poet, witnessed this historic event. Inspired by the sight of the American flag still waving over Fort McHenry after a night of bombardment, he penned a poem that would become “The Star-Spangled Banner.”
