The completion of a new storage facility at MOD Ashchurch marks a significant milestone in the UK’s Vehicle Storage and Support Programme (VSSP), enhancing military readiness and supporting local economies.

This modern facility, housing over 900 Army vehicles, underscores the UK’s commitment to sustainability and operational efficiency.

Enhancing Military Readiness

The newly completed storage facility at MOD Ashchurch is a pivotal development in the Vehicle Storage and Support Programme (VSSP).

Designed to house over 900 Army vehicles, this state-of-the-art infrastructure enhances the British Army’s operational readiness by providing advanced storage and maintenance solutions.

The Controlled Humidity Environment (CHE) storage significantly reduces vehicle maintenance costs and deterioration, ensuring that military assets remain in optimal condition for deployment.

Sustainability Initiatives

In line with the UK’s net-zero targets, the VSSP incorporates cutting-edge sustainability measures. The facility generates solar energy on-site, reducing its carbon footprint while supporting national environmental goals.

This focus on sustainability not only aligns with broader UK policies but also sets a precedent for future military infrastructure projects worldwide.

Belinda Lunn, Senior Responsible Owner of VSSP, said:

“The handover of this new CHE storage building is a fantastic milestone in our programme to deliver this exceptional facility for the Field Army. This is the fifth building to be completed under VSSP in the past year and represents a step change in the capability of the site.”

“We look forward to further progress over coming months as we continue our collaboration with DIO and industry partners, to improve working infrastructure for personnel at MOD Ashchurch.”

Economic Contributions

The construction of this facility has had a positive economic impact on the local community.

Employing up to 400 people during its development phase, it has also supported local apprenticeships, contributing to skill development and job creation.

This investment in human capital underscores the project’s dual focus on enhancing military capability while fostering economic growth.

Collaborative Success

  • Successful collaboration between DIO, Skanska, Mace, and the Army ensured efficient project delivery.
  • The project overcame complex challenges inherent in constructing within a live military environment.
  • Innovative design efforts resulted in surpassing air tightness specifications for enhanced durability.
  • The programme is set for completion by 2027 with ongoing developments planned.
