Operation Clean Sweep, led by the Environment Agency in Lincolnshire, has successfully targeted waste crime through vehicle inspections and site visits, resulting in fines and vehicle seizures.

This initiative underscores the importance of multi-agency collaboration in protecting the environment and supporting legitimate businesses.

Operation Clean Sweep: A Collaborative Effort

Operation Clean Sweep was a concerted effort by the Environment Agency to address waste crime in Lincolnshire.

The operation involved roadside inspections in Boston and site visits in Skegness, uncovering illegal waste activities.

By working closely with Lincolnshire Police, British Transport Police, and local councils, the operation demonstrated the power of partnership in tackling environmental issues.

The Impact on Local Communities

The operation’s success is significant for local communities as it helps maintain cleaner environments and safer neighborhoods. Illegal waste dumping can harm ecosystems and reduce property values.

By enforcing regulations, Operation Clean Sweep encourages responsible waste disposal practices that benefit residents’ daily lives.

Insights from Stakeholders

Stuart Hoyle, Environment Agency Waste Crime Specialist, said:

“Large scale waste crime and fly-tipping can only happen through the use of vehicles, which is why operations such as Clean Sweep are vital for tackling waste crime. Last week’s operation uncovered crime, prevented offences and gathered a wealth of intelligence to aid future investigations.”

“The operation isn’t possible without the collaboration of partners, so I would like to thank all Lincolnshire Environmental Crime Partnership agencies, in particular the Roads Policing for its excellent work, and Boston United Football Club for the use of their grounds for vehicle inspections.”

Callum Butler, Environmental Portfolio Holder at Boston Borough Council, said:

“Tackling waste crime is a priority for our borough, and Operation Clean Sweep demonstrates the power of partnership working in keeping our community clean and safe.”

“By bringing together multiple agencies, we can identify and disrupt those who fail to dispose of waste responsibly, ensuring that those who follow the rules are protected.”

Noteworthy Outcomes

  • 25 vehicles inspected; 5 found carrying waste unlawfully
  • Boston Borough Council issued six £300 fines
  • Lincolnshire Police issued seven fines and 19 traffic offence reports
  • Public encouraged to report illegal activities via a 24-hour hotline
  • Collaboration between agencies proved effective against waste crime

The Broader Context of Waste Management

This operation is part of broader efforts to combat waste crime across the UK. Previous initiatives like “Let’s SCRAP Fly-Tipping” have shown that collaboration is key to successful enforcement.

Effective strategies developed here could serve as models for other countries facing similar challenges.
