The UK government has unveiled plans to expand its submarine fleet, aiming to build up to 12 new SSN-AUKUS attack submarines by the late 2030s.

This initiative is part of a broader £15 billion investment in the nuclear warhead programme, promising enhanced national security and creating thousands of skilled jobs across the country.

Submarine Fleet Expansion

The UK is set to increase its attack submarine fleet from seven Astute Class boats to up to 12 SSN-AUKUS submarines by the late 2030s.

This expansion is a significant component of the AUKUS partnership, reflecting a strategic shift in response to rising global threats.

The new submarines will be built at an accelerated rate of one every 18 months, enhancing industrial capacity at key sites like Barrow and Raynesway in Derby.

Job Creation and Economic Growth

  • The submarine programme will create and sustain 30,000 skilled jobs nationwide.
  • Plans include delivering 30,000 apprenticeships and 14,000 graduate roles over ten years.
  • A £15 billion investment will modernize the UK’s nuclear warhead programme, supporting over 9,000 jobs at Aldermaston alone.
  • This initiative aims to double defence and civil nuclear apprenticeships and graduate intakes.

This expansion is expected to drive demand for highly skilled workers across various sectors, including defence manufacturing, engineering, and technology.

It signals long-term job security and economic growth while requiring significant government expenditure and resource allocation.

Strategic Defence Review Insights

The announcement coincides with the unveiling of the Strategic Defence Review, which emphasizes moving the Armed Forces towards warfighting readiness.

The review includes 62 recommendations focusing on increased munitions stockpiles and new cyber capabilities.

Defence Secretary John Healey MP highlighted that these measures are crucial for countering increasing threats such as Russian aggression.

Quotes from Stakeholders

John Healey MP, the UK Defence Secretary said:

“Our outstanding submariners patrol 24/7 to keep us and our allies safe. With new state-of-the-art submarines patrolling international waters… we are making Britain secure at home and strong abroad.”

The UK Prime Minister added:

“National security is the foundation of my Plan for Change… this plan will ensure Britain is secure at home while delivering a defence dividend of well-paid jobs up and down the country.”

Broader Implications

For UK citizens, this means enhanced national security through a stronger naval deterrent alongside improved cyber defence capabilities.

The government’s commitment also extends to repairing armed forces housing with over £1.5 billion in additional funding directly benefiting military personnel and their families by improving living standards.
