The Ministry of Defence and Defence Secretary Dan Jarvis have announced more than £500 million to continue transforming the UK Commando Force, including new high-speed boats, strike drones and autonomous systems.

The announcement was published on 28 June 2026 and is linked to the Defence Investment Plan, which is expected ahead of the NATO Summit. The plan will set out funding intended to support the Armed Forces, British industry and NATO deterrence and defence.

The UK Commando Force is described by the Ministry of Defence as an elite frontline rapid-reaction force able to deploy at short notice. The announcement places the force’s future development around the High North, where the department said UK and NATO security interests are growing.

Commando Force Investment Announced

The Ministry of Defence said the Defence Secretary has spent the past two weeks refocusing the Defence Investment Plan towards more immediate frontline priorities. The department said the refreshed plan will prioritise getting the latest equipment into the hands of military personnel.

The investment supports the continued transition of today’s Commando Force into the Future Commando Force, with greater emphasis on maritime strike, rapid deployment and autonomous technologies.

  • Funding scope: more than £500 million for the Commando Force transformation.
  • Plan timing: publication expected ahead of the NATO Summit.
  • Frontline focus: equipment directed towards deployed military personnel.

New Boats, Drones And Autonomous Systems

The Commandos will receive new high-speed Commando Insertion Craft designed to support rapid maritime operations. The Ministry of Defence said the craft could be used across a range of missions, including maritime security operations.

The transformation package includes nearly £100 million for new technologies. The Ministry of Defence listed uncrewed vessels, next-generation communications, networked targeting and strike drones as part of the planned investment.

Planned Commando Force Equipment

Capability Investment Area Purpose
Insertion craft High-speed boats Maritime operations
Strike drones Autonomous technology Frontline support
Communications Next-generation systems Networked operations

High North And NATO Security Role

The Ministry of Defence said the Future Commando Force will be focused on the High North because of its growing importance to UK and NATO security. The force operates across Arctic defence missions and immediate crisis-response activity in other regions.

The department described the UK Commando Force as part of the vanguard of NATO’s rapid-reaction forces. Its role is presented as moving between year-round defence tasks and rapid deployment when events require a UK military response.

  • High North: future force focus linked to UK and NATO security.
  • Rapid reaction: deployment capability at very short notice.
  • Mission range: Arctic defence and wider crisis-response operations.

Industrial And Allied Cooperation

The Commando Insertion Craft programme will involve collaboration with Norway, which the Ministry of Defence described as a NATO ally in the High North. The department said the work will build on the historic Type 26 frigate deal.

The technology investment is also being framed as an economic opportunity for UK industry. The Ministry of Defence said the programme is expected to support high-skilled jobs, technology development and future export opportunities.

Defence Investment Plan Context

Area Detail Context
Funding Over £500 million Commando transformation
Technology Nearly £100 million New systems and drones
Ally link Norway High North cooperation

Future Amphibious Capability

The programme also includes investment in a new class of larger Amphibious Transport Ships intended to support future Commando operations. The Ministry of Defence said the aim is to create a new combined fleet with the Netherlands.

The ships are intended to support the wider operational role of the Commandos alongside new craft, drones and communication systems. The announcement places amphibious capability within the same frontline investment programme rather than as a separate procurement theme.

Ministerial Comments

Defence Secretary Dan Jarvis MBE MP said;

“Our elite Commando Force is respected around the world, conducting operations that help to keep the nation and our allies safe.”

“We’re investing in new lethal strike drones, high-speed boats and amphibious transport ships to give our Commandos the equipment they need to stay ahead of adversaries and defend us.”

“The Defence Investment Plan will prioritise getting the latest kit into the hands of our frontline forces, so they can continue their vital work in an increasingly dangerous world.”

The Defence Investment Plan places the Future Commando Force at the centre of UK amphibious modernisation, combining investment in high-speed craft, drones, autonomous systems, communications and future amphibious ships. The Ministry of Defence said the programme is intended to strengthen NATO operations, improve frontline readiness and expand opportunities for the UK defence industry.
