A significant boost is coming to Connecticut’s volunteering programs. AmeriCorps has announced over $3.8 million in federal funding to support various service initiatives across the state. This funding aims to enhance mental health support and youth mentorship programs, making a substantial impact on community well-being.

Empowering Communities through Service

AmeriCorps, the federal agency for national service and volunteerism, recently revealed a substantial funding boost at the Connecticut Service Symposium. AmeriCorps CEO Michael D. Smith announced the $3.8 million grant, which will empower approximately 50 AmeriCorps members and 30 AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers to engage in service activities statewide.

This announcement was made alongside national service champions Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) and Representative John Larson (CT-1), as well as Serve Connecticut Commission staff and AmeriCorps alumni from Health 360 and New Opportunities.

“Our steadfast commitment to helping communities tackle urgent challenges is demonstrated by this year’s AmeriCorps State and National and AmeriCorps Seniors grants,”

said Michael D. Smith.

“These funds will enable AmeriCorps members and volunteers to support youth mental health, well-being, and education, showcasing the power of national service to drive positive change.”

Strategic Allocation of Funds

The $3.8 million investment addresses critical issues such as the mental health crisis and the needs of disconnected youth. Key beneficiaries include Health360’s Healthy Mind Alliance and New Opportunities, Inc.’s Foster Grandparent program.

Senator Richard Blumenthal emphasized the significance of these programs:

“These programs will provide vital support for mental illness and meaningful mentorship to young people, significantly impacting lives across Connecticut.”

Key Beneficiaries and Program Focus

  • Health360’s Healthy Mind Alliance: Mental health support and suicide prevention.
  • New Opportunities, Inc.: Foster Grandparent mentorship for low-income children.

Enhancing Youth Mentorship and Mental Health Support

Representative John Larson highlighted the importance of mentorship, noting that

“this funding connects low-income kids and kids with disabilities to foster grandparents who provide tutoring and support, making a huge difference in their lives.”

The AmeriCorps Seniors Foster Grandparent Program will especially benefit, fostering inter-generational relationships and enriching community ties.

Benefits of the Foster Grandparent Program:

  • Tutoring and mentoring for low-income children.
  • Support for children with disabilities.
  • Strengthening of inter-generational relationships.

Tricia Harrity, Executive Director of Health360, expressed excitement about the continued partnership:

“Healthy Minds Alliance addresses unmet mental health needs through strong partnerships, increasing capacity to meet pressing community demands while building a robust mental health workforce pipeline.”

Continued Commitment to Community Resilience

AmeriCorps has a long history of bolstering community resilience and empowerment.

Representative Rosa DeLauro praised AmeriCorps for its dedication:

“The grant funding will strengthen Connecticut’s service opportunities, making our communities stronger and healthier.”

Representative John B. Larson honored the legacy of national service on President Kennedy’s 107th birthday:

“This funding supports the AmeriCorps Seniors Foster Grandparent Program, enriching relationships between seniors and students while bolstering the state’s AmeriCorps program.”

Key Figures and Their Support:

  • Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT): Advocated for mental health and youth mentorship.
  • Representative John Larson (CT-1): Emphasized the importance of inter-generational relationships.
  • Representative Rosa DeLauro (CT-03): Supported the strengthening of service opportunities.

Future Impact and Expansion

Over the past three decades, AmeriCorps has mobilized over 1.3 million Americans in service. This year alone, more than 2,400 individuals across Connecticut have united to meet local needs, strengthen communities, and expand opportunities through national service. The $3.8 million investment will continue this legacy, providing essential support and tutoring to students and offering suicide prevention training in the Waterbury area.

“We look forward to seeing the impact of these investments, which will touch countless lives,” said Representative Jahana Hayes.

“These funds will support and tutor students and provide crucial mental health resources.”

Future Impact:

  • Enhanced support for mental health initiatives.
  • Increased mentorship opportunities for youth.
  • Strengthened community resilience and empowerment.

The Takeaway

AmeriCorps’ investment of $3.8 million in Connecticut underscores its commitment to fostering community resilience and addressing pressing issues like mental health and youth disconnection. As AmeriCorps members and volunteers continue to serve, their efforts will drive positive change and strengthen communities across the state.

The collaboration between AmeriCorps, Health 360, New Opportunities, and local leaders highlights the power of national service to create a brighter future for Connecticut.

By focusing on strategic programs and leveraging robust funding, AmeriCorps is poised to make a significant impact, demonstrating the enduring value of community service and volunteerism.
