In a significant move to support youth rehabilitation, AmeriCorps and the Department of Justice announced $2.5 million in funding for 12 innovative programs across the United States.

These programs aim to assist young people transitioning from juvenile facilities back into their communities, fostering rehabilitation and community reintegration.

Strengthening Youth Reentry Programs

Objective and Funding Details

AmeriCorps, in collaboration with the Department of Justice Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, is allocating $2.5 million to enhance youth reentry programs.

This funding is bolstered by additional support from AmeriCorps State and National, helping nearly 4,000 AmeriCorps members engage in service nationwide.

These programs are designed to provide comprehensive support to youth, addressing their unique needs during the critical transition period from juvenile facilities to their communities.

Impact on Community and Youth

This initiative underscores the commitment to addressing the complex challenges faced by youth in the justice system. By leveraging the strengths of both new and existing grantees, the partnership aims to create a robust support network that promotes rehabilitation, personal growth, and community integration.

The Main Programs

Credible Messenger Mentoring Movement

One standout program is the Credible Messenger Mentoring Movement, which focuses on breaking the cycle of justice system involvement for youth and families. This program has established the Credible Messenger Corps, consisting of 50 leaders who mentor 500 justice-involved youth across cities like Atlanta, Columbus, New Orleans, New York, and San Diego. Through intensive mentoring, these leaders build trusting relationships, provide safe spaces, and facilitate healing and restorative experiences.

PowerCorpsPHL

In Philadelphia, PowerCorpsPHL connects un- and under-employed young adults, vulnerable to gun violence, to careers in clean energy, green infrastructure, and community-based roles.

Participants engage in an immersive, paid experience lasting 4 to 24 months, ultimately leading to living wage jobs. This program not only provides job training but also strengthens community ties and promotes public safety.

Impact Justice’s California Justice Leaders

Impact Justice’s California Justice Leaders program supports young adults post-incarceration by helping them find safe, affordable housing, paid work, and educational opportunities.

AmeriCorps members serving with this program also assist young people in taking advantage of record clearing pathways, opening doors that would otherwise remain closed.

This initiative offers a growth opportunity for the Justice Leaders themselves, who transition from AmeriCorps placements into permanent jobs or advanced degrees.

Leaders Statements

Michael D. Smith, CEO of AmeriCorps, emphasized the collaboration’s significance:

“AmeriCorps’ partnership with the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention allows us to connect with young individuals who may have been overlooked by the system, recruit diverse talent, and support organizations with the resources to help second-chance youth.”

“We are honored to welcome new grantees like Credible Messenger Mentoring Movement and support their impactful work.”

Liz Ryan, Administrator of OJJDP, reflected on her personal experience:

“As an AmeriCorps member many years ago, I know firsthand what a great opportunity AmeriCorps offers for young people.”

“Partnering with AmeriCorps to help system-involved youth overcome reentry barriers and contribute to their communities is a win-win for public safety.”

“These young volunteers will gain critical experience and resources, while their communities become stronger.”
