Canada has reaffirmed its commitment to helping Syria navigate a severe humanitarian crisis. Minister of International Development Ahmed Hussen, after a diplomatic tour of Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Türkiye, announced $17.25 million in humanitarian funding. This timely support underscores Canada’s dedication to addressing the escalating needs of over 16 million Syrians affected by a 13-year conflict.

A Unified Response to Syria’s Crisis

The Syrian crisis has left nearly 70% of the country’s population reliant on aid. Recognizing the urgency, Minister Hussen’s visit aimed to strengthen partnerships and explore collaborative solutions. His meetings with key international officials emphasized coordinated efforts to deliver essential resources and restore stability in Syria and the broader region.

Diplomatic Engagement in Qatar

In Qatar, Minister Hussen met with Maryam bint Ali bin Nasser Al-Misnad, Minister of State for International Cooperation. Their discussions centered on:

  • Qatar’s ongoing support for Syrians through humanitarian efforts.
  • Opportunities for Canada-Qatar cooperation in development and aid programs.

Strengthening Regional Ties in Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia provided a platform to address shared objectives for regional peace. Key engagements included:

  • Collaboration with the Gulf Cooperation Council and King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre.
  • Exploring avenues with the Islamic Development Bank to amplify humanitarian impacts.

Partnering with Türkiye on Refugee Support

Minister Hussen’s delegation was the first Canadian mission to visit the Türkiye-Syria border since the end of the Assad regime. Highlights included:

  • Meetings with refugee organizations to discuss on-the-ground challenges.
  • Visits to Gaziantep and Kilis provinces to hear Syrian refugees’ stories firsthand.
