At the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, Minister Joly delivered a powerful address on behalf of Canada, emphasizing the nation’s unwavering commitment to human rights, peace, and international cooperation.

Speaking from the traditional territory of the Lenape people, Minister Joly highlighted Canada’s role in addressing global conflicts, advocating for UN reforms, and promoting gender equality in international leadership.

 

Canada’s Stance on Human Rights and Freedom

Minister Joly began by acknowledging the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation, underscoring Canada’s dedication to honoring Indigenous Peoples and addressing past injustices. He stressed that Canada stands for “freedom from fear, violence, intimidation, and discrimination,” fostering inclusivity and protecting vulnerable communities.

Minister Joly’s Address:

  • Human Rights Advocacy: Canada condemns the Taliban’s oppressive actions in Afghanistan and supports international efforts to hold them accountable under the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women.
  • Crisis Response in Haiti: Highlighting the severe gang violence and corruption, Minister Joly emphasized the need for a multinational security support mission and announced over $100 million in aid to stabilize the region.
  • Middle East Conflict Resolution: Canada calls for an immediate ceasefire in Israel, Gaza, and Lebanon, advocating for peace talks and the protection of civilians.
  • Support for Ukraine: Reiterating support for Ukraine amidst ongoing Russian aggression, Canada commits to continued assistance and participation in peace initiatives.
  • UN Reform Initiatives: Minister Joly advocated for gender equality within the UN, urging the appointment of the first female Secretary-General and President of the General Assembly.
