Renewing Commitment on a Global Stage

On November 25, 2024, the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the Honourable Ahmed Hussen, Minister of International Development, reaffirmed Canada’s leadership in combatting violence against women.

Marking the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, their statement emphasized Canada’s financial contributions, policy framework, and collaborative efforts to ensure the safety and rights of women and girls globally.

A Comprehensive Approach to Gender-Based Violence

Canada’s commitment to ending gender-based violence goes beyond words, focusing on impactful actions. The Feminist International Assistance Policy drives these efforts, integrating local partnerships and civil society organizations.

Major Contributions:

  • Financial Support: Canada is among the top global donors, funding initiatives to end harmful practices like child marriage and female genital mutilation.
  • Feminist Movements: Direct support for women’s rights organizations helps challenge discriminatory norms and promote safer communities.

In 2023 alone, over 35 million people benefited from Canadian-funded programs targeting gender-based violence, underscoring the country’s unwavering dedication.

Focused Initiatives Making a Difference

Canada’s strategy includes diverse and targeted approaches to tackle violence against women, even in challenging contexts like humanitarian crises.

Prevention Efforts:

  • Harmful Practices: Programs address root causes of violence, from early marriage to systemic inequality.
  • Engaging Communities: Men, boys, and local leaders are key participants in campaigns to reshape societal attitudes.

Emergency Support:

Canada funds immediate services for survivors, including:

  • Shelters providing safe havens.
  • Hotlines offering around-the-clock crisis support.

Canada’s Financial Contributions at a Glance

Year Beneficiaries (Millions) Focus Areas
2023 35+ Harmful practices, crisis support, advocacy
2024 (est.) 40+ Expanding feminist movement funding

Global Partnerships and Advocacy

Canada collaborates with international organizations to amplify its impact. Key campaigns like the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, running until December 10, 2024, aim to raise awareness and drive action.

Participation in these global movements aligns with Canada’s long-standing commitment to protecting human rights and ensuring women and girls can live free from violence.

Join the Conversation

As Canada continues to champion this critical cause, every voice matters. Join the movement by using #16Days on social media to stand in solidarity against gender-based violence and advocate for a safer, more equitable world.

Together, we can make change happen.
