Did you know that dengue cases are on the rise in Central Visayas despite the ongoing dry spell?

This unexpected surge has left health officials concerned as almost 7,000 cases have been reported in the first half of 2024. Let’s delve into why this is happening and what can be done to combat this health crisis.

A Startling Increase

Central Visayas reported 6,968 dengue cases and 18 deaths from January to June 2024. According to Dr. Ronald Jarvik Buscato, a medical officer of the Department of Health (DOH) Central Visayas’ Communicable Diseases Section, this is a 95% increase compared to the same period last year. Despite the dry conditions, dengue cases have soared, posing a significant public health challenge.

Causes of the Spike

Dr. Buscato attributes the rise in dengue cases to the common practice of storing water during dry spells. This creates breeding grounds for dengue mosquitoes, particularly the Aedes species. Additionally, warmer temperatures speed up the mosquitoes’ metabolism, making them more active and increasing the spread of the disease.

Regional Impact and Hotspots

Central Visayas now ranks fourth among Philippine regions with high dengue cases. Interestingly, the rural areas are the new hotspots, moving away from the previously high-ranking cities of Cebu, Lapu-Lapu, and Mandaue. This shift highlights the need for targeted interventions in rural communities.

Preventive Measures

To combat the rise in dengue cases, health officials are promoting the 4S strategy:

  • Search and Destroy Breeding Sites: Regularly inspect and eliminate potential mosquito breeding grounds.
  • Self-Protection Measures: Use insect repellent and wear long-sleeved clothing to reduce mosquito bites.
  • Seek Early Consultation: Visit a healthcare provider if you experience a fever lasting more than two days.
  • Support Fogging/Spraying: Participate in community fogging and spraying efforts in areas with high dengue cases.

The Role of Climate Change

Climate change exacerbates the dengue situation by creating more favorable conditions for mosquito breeding. Increased temperatures, altered rainfall patterns, and higher humidity levels all contribute to the spread of dengue. As the climate continues to warm, regions previously unaffected by dengue are now at risk.

Importance of Community Involvement

Community involvement is crucial in controlling dengue. Public health authorities are emphasizing proactive measures and the participation of local communities in preventive activities. By working together, we can significantly reduce the incidence of dengue and protect public health.

Final Thoughts

The spike in dengue cases in Central Visayas amidst a dry spell is a stark reminder of the importance of ongoing vigilance and community involvement.

Through the 4S strategy and targeted interventions, we can mitigate the impact of dengue and safeguard our communities from this growing health threat.
