Manila is the vibrant capital of the Philippines, a sprawling metropolis of over 12 million people. It is home to centuries-old churches and monuments, world-class shopping malls, and some of the best food in Southeast Asia.

Here’s what you need to know before visiting this incredible city in Southwest Asia.

History: From Ancient Times

Manila is one of the oldest cities in Southeast Asia, with a long and complicated history that dates back to ancient times. Its strategic location on the coast of Manila Bay in the southwestern part of Luzon Island has made it a major port city since as early as the 13th century.

The city was first mentioned during the Chinese Ming Dynasty; documents from 1403 referred to it as an important trading post between China and what would become known as modern day Philippines.

In 1571, Manila became an official Spanish possession under Miguel López de Legazpi, who established a colonial government there. During this time it grew rapidly into an international hub for commerce, becoming home to merchants from Europe, East Asia and beyond.

World War II

Manila, the capital of the Philippines, played an integral role during World War II. In 1941, Manila was a bustling city with a population of more than 700,000 people. It was an important hub for trade and commerce in the Southeast Asian region. At the onset of World War II in December 1941, Japan launched a brutal invasion that would last three years and devastate the city.

The city’s strategic location made it a target for Japanese forces seeking to control key points in their quest for dominance in Asia. On Dec. 8, 1941, Japanese bombers attacked Manila and destroyed much of its infrastructure including power plants and communication systems.

By January 2nd 1942 all organized Philippine-American forces had surrendered to Japanese troops under Lt-General Masaharu Homma who then occupied Manila until March 1945 when American forces liberated it from occupation.
