The Environment Agency has unveiled significant upgrades to Strand Quay in Rye, enhancing accessibility and boosting the local economy.

Completed on April 17, 2025, these improvements include a new floating pontoon, access ramp, upgraded moorings, and a refurbished pétanque terrain for community enjoyment.

Enhancing Accessibility and Safety

Strand Quay’s recent upgrades are designed to improve safety and accessibility for all visitors. The installation of a new floating pontoon and access ramp ensures that boaters, including those with impaired mobility, can safely enjoy the quay.

These enhancements reflect a commitment to inclusivity and modern infrastructure while maintaining the quay’s historical charm.

Economic Boost for Rye

The revitalization of Strand Quay is expected to attract more visitors by boat, providing a significant boost to Rye’s local economy.

By drawing tourists from across Europe and the UK, local businesses stand to benefit from increased foot traffic. This project aligns with broader efforts to support regional economies through strategic investments in infrastructure.

Community Engagement Through Recreation

The refurbishment of the pétanque terrain offers a free recreational space for locals and visitors alike. This initiative not only enhances community engagement but also promotes outdoor activities that contribute to public well-being.

The project underscores the importance of integrating leisure facilities into urban planning.

Preserving History While Modernizing

  • Strand Quay was originally built in the 1930s as part of maritime development efforts.
  • The quay’s revitalization maintains its historical essence while introducing modern amenities.
  • This balance between preservation and modernization reflects sustainable tourism practices.
  • Nearby attractions like Rye Harbour nature reserve add ecological value to the area.

Sustainable Tourism Initiatives

The improvements at Strand Quay highlight a broader trend towards sustainable tourism in the UK. By preserving historical sites while enhancing visitor experiences, such projects contribute positively to both cultural heritage and economic growth.

This approach ensures that tourism remains viable without compromising environmental or historical integrity.

Stakeholder Comments

Charlotte Amor, waterways manager for the Environment Agency, said:

“I’m delighted and proud to see these improvements to Strand Quay being used by boaters and the local community. The quay is such a special place, and we hope this investment will help bring more visitors by boat to spend time and enjoy Rye and the beautiful surrounding area, and give a boost to the local economy”

James Bateman, Rye harbour master, said:

“Rye is a unique and fabulous location that attracts boaters from all over Europe as well as the UK. These new moorings and improved facilities will attract even more visitors each year to our town.

The new ramp and floating pontoon also mean that all boaters, including those with impaired mobility, will be able to access the quay safely and easily. It’s a fantastic upgrade which will benefit our visitors for many years to come.”
