The UK is taking a steps to bolster the mental resilience of Ukrainian forces, aiming to train 180 soldiers in mental health first aid for combat in 2025—nearly double the number trained this year.

This initiative is part of Operation Interflex, a UK-led international program supporting Ukraine amid ongoing conflict.

The Need for Mental Health Training

As Ukrainian troops face rising trauma and stress from combat, the demand for psychological support has grown. In response, the UK launched the Combat Stress Signposting Course (CSSC) at the request of Ukraine’s Armed Forces.

This five-week course, co-designed by UK and Ukrainian experts, equips commanders with techniques to manage battle stress and trauma, building resilience across military ranks.

Skills Taught in the CSSC Include:

  • Battle shock management strategies.
  • The “iCover” technique, enabling soldiers to recover from acute stress in under a minute.
  • Trauma risk management and pathways to clinical support.

Role of Operation Interflex

Operation Interflex has trained over 51,000 Ukrainian troops since 2022, focusing on essential frontline skills and mental resilience.

With the participation of 12 partner nations, the program ensures Ukrainian forces are equipped to withstand the physical and psychological challenges of combat.

Combat Mental Resilience in Numbers

Training Focus 2024 Participants 2025 Participants % Increase
Mental Health First Aid 100 180 80%
Operation Interflex Troops Trained 51,000 60,000+ 17%

Building Strength on the Frontlines

Graduates of the CSSC, known as Control Stress Operators, play a critical role in safeguarding troop morale and readiness. Beyond managing stress, these trained commanders will:

  • Share techniques with fellow soldiers.
  • Offer trauma support on the frontlines.
  • Enhance resilience through mindfulness and grounding exercises.

A Commitment Beyond Training

The UK’s support for Ukraine extends beyond mental health initiatives. A new £225M military package includes maritime drones, air defence systems, and counter-drone technologies.

This comprehensive assistance underscores the UK’s commitment to standing “shoulder to shoulder” with Ukraine through 2025.

Parting Shot

The expansion of the UK’s mental health training program marks a vital contribution to Ukraine’s combat readiness. By nearly doubling the number of soldiers trained in 2025, the initiative empowers Ukrainian forces to address the psychological demands of war.
