Retired Marine Corps Chief Warrant Officer 3 Thomas J. Heaton, who served over two decades with nine deployments, has found renewed stability through his service dog Colt, provided by the Warriors Choice Foundation.

This partnership has significantly improved Heaton’s quality of life as he transitions to a counterintelligence analyst role at the National Space Defense Center.

Veteran’s Journey to Healing

Thomas J. Heaton dedicated over twenty years to the Marine Corps, including nine challenging deployments. After retiring, he faced significant emotional and mental health challenges, including hyper-vigilance. These struggles are common among veterans transitioning back to civilian life.

The Warriors Choice Foundation stepped in to assist Heaton by matching him with a service dog named Colt. This organization is committed to supporting veterans by providing them with service dogs that can help manage their mental health issues effectively.

Heaton said:

“When I came home, I wanted to be overseas, and when I was overseas, I wanted to be home. I was so used to the discomfort of being displaced, and that became my comfort zone.”

“Adjusting to being present, to just being where I am, has been a challenge for me. And I still work on that every day.”

Service Dogs: A Vital Support System

Colt has become an essential part of Heaton’s life, offering companionship and support that have greatly enhanced his well-being.

The presence of a service dog like Colt can be likened to having a team watching one’s back, providing security and comfort.

Heaton describes Colt as his “wingman,” emphasizing the critical role that service dogs play in helping veterans regain control over their lives post-service.

This relationship highlights the importance of such programs for veteran support.

Background Info

Before deploying to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Heaton launched his U.S. Marine Corps career in 2002 as an ammo technician. Demonstrating his dedication, he volunteered for a second deployment.
In 2005, Heaton transitioned to counter and human intelligence, a move that significantly impacted his career trajectory.
Heaton went on to deploy to various global hotspots, including Iraq and Afghanistan, holding key leadership positions. His intelligence gathering efforts directly influenced military operations and strategy.

National Security Implications

  • The integration of service dogs into veteran care supports national security by ensuring veterans are mentally fit for civilian roles.
  • Programs like those offered by the Warriors Choice Foundation contribute to social stability by aiding veteran reintegration.
  • The success stories of veterans like Heaton underscore the need for continued investment in mental health resources for former military personnel.

Supportive Measures for Veterans

  • Service dogs provide crucial emotional support and companionship for veterans facing post-service challenges.
  • The Warriors Choice Foundation plays a pivotal role in matching veterans with suitable canine companions.
  • This initiative highlights the broader need for comprehensive support systems for transitioning military personnel.

“It’s about the right tool for the right job, the right man for the mission, and the right wingman for the fight. Colt is my wingman.”

— Thomas J. Heaton

“Having [a service dog] is like having an entire Marine special operations team watching your back.”

— Gunnery Sgt. Morgan Staal
