Nurturing Future Leaders: The 62nd Annual USSYP

A New Chapter in the USSYP

The Department of Defense (DOD) has proudly announced the selection of 17 U.S. military officers as Armed Forces ambassadors for the 62nd Annual United States Senate Youth Program (USSYP). Set to take place in Washington, D.C., from March 2-9, 2024, the USSYP offers an exceptional educational opportunity for outstanding high school students aspiring to careers in public service.

About the USSYP

Since its inception in 1962 by the U.S. Senate, the USSYP has been a cornerstone program for introducing high-achieving students to the intricacies of the U.S. government. It focuses on the interrelationships among the legislative, judicial, and executive branches, fostering a deeper understanding of public service and governance.

Role of Military Mentors

These selected military mentors, representing each branch of the Armed Forces, play a crucial role in enriching the students’ experience. The DOD selects mentors known for their professional excellence and commitment to public service. Their guidance is pivotal in mentoring the nation’s future public servants.

Meet the 2024 Military Mentors

This year’s team is led by senior military mentor Lt. Cmdr. Alexandra Miller, U.S. Coast Guard, and assistant senior military mentor Capt. Joseph Puntoriero, U.S. Army. They are joined by a distinguished group of officers from various branches, including the U.S. Army, Air Force, Marine Corps, Navy, Space Force, and Coast Guard. Each mentor brings a wealth of experience and leadership skills to the program.

Impact on Future Leaders

Melanie Fonder Kaye, Deputy Assistant to the Secretary of Defense for Strategic Engagement, emphasized the diverse backgrounds and experiences these officers bring. Their stories and advice are invaluable in shaping the perspectives and ambitions of these young leaders.

USSYP’s Legacy and Funding

The USSYP has consistently received funding and administration from The Hearst Foundations since its beginning. This commitment includes covering all program costs and providing $10,000 undergraduate college scholarships to each of the 104 delegates. The program features speakers from the highest levels of elected and appointed government officials.

For More Information

For further details on the DOD’s annual support for the USSYP, inquiries can be directed to the Office of the Assistant to the Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs Community Engagement Directorate. Additionally, updates and highlights from the program will be shared on @SenateYouth and @DoD_Outreach on social media platforms.

Shaping Tomorrow’s Leaders

The 62nd Annual USSYP, with the support of the DOD and the dedication of its military mentors, stands as a beacon of inspiration for young individuals passionate about public service. It’s a platform where the leaders of tomorrow gain invaluable insights and build lasting connections that shape their future paths.
