As the second day of the G7 Ministerial Meeting began, the High Representative/Vice-President addressed critical international issues, ranging from the ongoing conflict in the Middle East to the continued support for Ukraine.

The European Union highlighted his reflections on the urgency of resolving these crises, underlining its stance on international law and humanitarian obligations.

Tackling the Middle East Crisis: Lebanon and Gaza

The ongoing conflict in Lebanon and Gaza has escalated the need for urgent action, with devastating consequences for civilians. The High Representative, having recently visited Lebanon and Jordan, provided a firsthand account of the situation.

He described the extensive damage in Lebanon, where almost 100,000 homes have been destroyed, leaving civilians with no safe refuge. He stressed the importance of enforcing a ceasefire, a proposal brokered by the United States and France, which includes Israel’s security concerns.

In Gaza, the humanitarian situation is dire. The High Representative condemned the obstruction of aid, highlighting that the Israeli army has prevented much-needed food and fuel from reaching Northern Gaza.

This has left around 250,000 people abandoned, with no resources to survive. The European Union calls for immediate action at the United Nations Security Council, emphasizing the need for humanitarian intervention as people continue to starve due to its use as a weapon.

The European Union’s Role in Upholding International Law

A recurring theme in the discussions was the European Union’s commitment to international law, particularly regarding the International Criminal Court (ICC). The High Representative made it clear that the EU cannot afford to pick and choose when it comes to supporting international justice.

He called on European nations to fulfill their obligations under the Rome Statute, ensuring that the ICC’s arrest warrants are respected, regardless of political interests.

“We must act consistently and hold those responsible for violations of international law accountable,” he stated.

This call to uphold justice is part of the EU’s broader commitment to human rights and international security.

The G7’s Commitment to Ukraine

The situation in Ukraine also dominated the agenda. While some discussions focused on the Middle East, the EU reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Ukraine in its defense against Russian aggression.

The High Representative emphasized that Europe’s strategic autonomy remains central to the EU’s foreign policy, ensuring that the continent will continue to provide vital support to Ukraine.

Despite differing views in the United States, the European Union remains resolute in its stance, pledging to sustain Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Strategic Autonomy and Global Trade

In light of recent tensions regarding tariffs, the High Representative also addressed the potential consequences of new trade wars, particularly with the United States.

The imposition of tariffs on multiple countries, including European nations, could disrupt global economic growth. The EU may take countermeasures, but the High Representative warns this would worsen global economic instability.

Call for Action

The High Representative’s remarks underscored the European Union’s pivotal role in addressing global crises.

The EU commits to humanitarian action, international law, and defending sovereign nations, leading on global peace, security, and justice.

As the G7 Ministerial Meeting progresses, the world watches closely for decisive actions that can bring hope to the most affected regions.
