The Coal Authority has officially rebranded as the Mining Remediation Authority, marking a pivotal shift in its focus from managing coal-related hazards to broader environmental remediation and low-carbon energy opportunities.

This change, approved by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, underscores the organisation’s commitment to safeguarding communities and fostering sustainable development across the UK.

Why the Name Change Matters

For over 30 years, the Coal Authority played a crucial role in addressing the environmental impacts of the UK’s mining history. Now, as the Mining Remediation Authority, its mission extends beyond coal.

The rebranding highlights the organisation’s ongoing efforts in pollution prevention, tip safety, and harnessing low-carbon opportunities from mining assets, such as mine water heating.

Lisa Pinney MBE, CEO of the Mining Remediation Authority, stated:

“Becoming the Mining Remediation Authority better reflects the important work we do to make a better future for people and the environment in mining areas across Great Britain.”

Expanded Responsibilities for a Greener Future

Broader Environmental Focus

The Mining Remediation Authority’s expanded remit includes:

  • Mine Water Treatment: Preventing pollution in rivers, seas, and drinking water sources.
  • Public Safety: Mitigating risks from mining hazards, including subsidence and abandoned mines.
  • Low-Carbon Innovation: Exploring sustainable energy solutions, such as mine water heating, to support the UK’s net-zero goals.

Jeff Halliwell, Chair of the Mining Remediation Authority, remarked on the significance of this transition:

The Coal Authority has undertaken vital work for 30 years to keep people, drinking water and the environment safe from the legacy impacts of our mining heritage.

As we look to the future and their work increasingly focuses on remediation and exciting low carbon opportunities, such as mine water heating, it is appropriate to change our name to reflect the important work ahead.

I am delighted to announce that today we become the Mining Remediation Authority.

Description

Impact

Mine Water Treatment Treating contaminated water from former mines to protect ecosystems and drinking water supplies. Cleaner rivers, safer drinking water, and reduced environmental hazards.
Public Safety and Hazard Management Addressing subsidence, ground stability, and abandoned mine hazards. Safer communities and increased land development opportunities.
Low-Carbon Opportunities Developing mine water heating and other renewable energy initiatives. Reduced carbon footprint and greater energy sustainability for communities.

A 24/7 Commitment to Public Safety

The Mining Remediation Authority’s rebranding does not alter its statutory responsibilities, which remain rooted in the Coal Industry Act 1994. The organisation continues to operate its 24/7 mining hazard line, ensuring round-the-clock support for communities affected by historical mining.

Looking Ahead: A Sustainable Future

The launch signals a forward-thinking approach to mining legacy management. By expanding its focus to include low-carbon initiatives and environmental remediation, the organisation is not only addressing past challenges but also shaping a more sustainable future for the UK.
