The U.S. recently conducted the Prominent Hunt exercise near Schenectady, New York, in January 2025 to enhance its nuclear forensics capabilities.

This interagency effort involved the Department of Defense, FBI, and Department of Energy to prepare for potential nuclear threats by collecting and analyzing simulated nuclear debris.

Enhancing National Security

The Prominent Hunt exercise is a strategic initiative aimed at bolstering U.S. national security by improving response capabilities to nuclear detonations.

The exercise demonstrates nuclear forensics’ ability to trace the origin of materials and hold perpetrators accountable effectively always.

This initiative involves collaboration among key agencies such as the Department of Defense (DOD), Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and Department of Energy (DOE).

Each agency plays a vital role in ensuring operational readiness and enhancing deterrence against potential nuclear threats.

International Relations Implications

The Prominent Hunt exercises are part of broader efforts to deter nuclear terrorism and demonstrate U.S. commitment to global security.

These exercises showcase the nation’s capability to respond effectively to potential threats, influencing international relations and fostering cooperation on nuclear non-proliferation issues.

Strategic Outcomes

  • Improved interagency collaboration enhances response capabilities.
  • Nuclear forensics skills deter potential state-sponsored terrorism.
  • Exercises reinforce U.S. commitment to global security efforts.
  • Operational readiness validated through simulated scenarios.
  • Demonstrated accountability measures strengthen deterrence strategies.

These technical skills and tools deny potential perpetrators — including state sponsors of terrorism — anonymity and ensure they will be held fully accountable,

said Wendin Smith, NNSA Associate Administrator.

National technical nuclear forensics is absolutely a part of nuclear deterrence by messaging to our adversaries that the United States government has the capability, should there be a nuclear detonation,

stated Brian Kohler.
