The United States, Japan, and South Korea issued a joint statement following their trilateral meeting in Brussels, emphasizing enhanced cooperation for regional security and economic stability amidst rising tensions in the Indo-Pacific region.

 

Security Commitments

The United States reaffirmed its defense commitments to Japan and South Korea during the trilateral meeting. This includes extended deterrence and robust security cooperation aimed at countering threats from North Korea and China.

The emphasis on these alliances is crucial for maintaining peace and stability in the region. Concerns were raised about North Korea’s military cooperation with Russia, as well as its ongoing nuclear and missile programs.

These issues remain central to discussions on regional security, highlighting the need for continued vigilance and collaboration among the three nations.

The group also discussed malicious cyber activities by North Korean actors, including the theft of nearly $1.5 billion in cryptocurrency.
They called on the international community to take action and prevent North Korea from converting the stolen funds into cash.

Human Rights and Economic Security

The Secretary and Foreign Ministers pledged to continue addressing human rights violations in North Korea and committed to strengthening energy security and cooperation.
They also emphasized the importance of leveraging industries to accelerate joint efforts in developing advanced civil nuclear reactors and ensuring maritime security.
