The tragic drowning of 17-year-old Joe Abbess and a 12-year-old girl in a rip current at Bournemouth beach has prompted a new safety campaign by the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency.

As summer approaches, the campaign aims to educate beachgoers on rip current dangers and promote lifesaving techniques like “Float to Live.”

Turning Grief into Advocacy

In the wake of her son’s untimely death, Vanessa Abbess has become an advocate for coastal safety. Her story, shared alongside Joe’s best friend, Joe Green, highlights the unpredictable nature of rip currents and underscores that even strong swimmers can be caught off guard.

Their personal accounts aim to resonate with families and young adults heading to the coast this summer.

Joe Abbess was only waist-deep when he was pulled under by a sudden rip current. This incident serves as a stark reminder that no one is immune to coastal dangers.

The campaign emphasizes choosing lifeguarded beaches, swimming with buddies, and practicing “Float to Live” if caught in currents.

What You Should Know

  • Rip currents cause an average of 30 deaths annually in the UK.
  • The “Float to Live” technique involves leaning back, ears submerged, and spreading arms until help arrives.
  • Call 999 for Coastguard emergencies when at the beach.

“Joe was being so sensible and safe… It is so shocking that Joe died and shows you’re never entirely safe in the sea – but there are ways to reduce the risk.”

— Vanessa Abbess, Mother of Joe Abbess

A Nationwide Call for Safety

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency supports this initiative as part of its broader effort to enhance public awareness about water safety during peak beach season. With personal stories at its core, this campaign seeks not only to inform but also emotionally engage people across the UK.

“Vanessa and Joe have shown real bravery… it’s a perfect time to remind everyone of a few simple tips.”

— James Instance, Divisional Commander, HM Coastguard

Moving Forward

This campaign is more than just a response; it’s a proactive step towards preventing future tragedies. By sharing their story, Vanessa Abbess and Joe Green hope to save lives through increased awareness.

As summer unfolds, their message serves as both a warning and an invitation for all beachgoers to prioritize safety.
