The Risley, Holcroft and Chat Moss National Nature Reserve, launched on July 14, 2025, offers a transformative opportunity for 2.7 million residents in Warrington and Greater Manchester to access nature-rich spaces within 10 miles of their homes.

This initiative aims to restore degraded peatlands, enhance biodiversity, and support climate resilience.

Restoring Vital Peatland Ecosystems

The newly designated Risley, Holcroft and Chat Moss National Nature Reserve is a significant step towards restoring the UK’s vital peatland ecosystems.

These habitats are crucial carbon sinks and play an essential role in flood prevention. The reserve spans an area equivalent to 750 rugby pitches or 25 Trafford Centres, highlighting the scale of restoration efforts.

Managed collaboratively by Natural England and six partner organizations, this project aims to promote nature recovery while providing urban communities with accessible green spaces.

The reserve’s location between Liverpool and Manchester makes it easily accessible for millions of people seeking outdoor recreation opportunities.

Community Benefits

  • Improved air quality and reduced flood risks for local communities
  • Enhanced biodiversity supporting rare species like lapwings and curlew
  • Opportunities for outdoor recreation improving mental wellbeing
  • A platform for coordinated environmental management among stakeholders
  • Potential influence on future environmental policies aligning with Net Zero ambitions

A Historical Perspective

The area covered by the reserve played a historic role during the Industrial Revolution. George Stephenson’s world-first intercity railway cut through Chat Moss in 1830, opening up the peatlands to drainage.

Today, these same landscapes are being repurposed as models for integrating industrial heritage with modern nature recovery efforts.

Quotes from Key Figures

Tony Juniper, Chair of Natural England, emphasized the significance of this initiative:

“This part of England led the world in industrial innovation and today it shows leadership in Nature recovery… Supporting nature around urban areas creates better places to live and work.”

Challenges Ahead

Sustaining funding remains a challenge as does balancing public access with habitat protection. Climate change impacts could alter peatland hydrology requiring adaptive management strategies.

Continued collaboration among partners will be essential for long-term success in measuring biodiversity recovery and carbon sequestration benefits.

In a Nutshell
