The 2024 United Nations Science, Technology, and Innovation Forum (UN STI Forum) highlighted groundbreaking initiatives to equip individuals worldwide with cutting-edge digital competencies.

The DigiBridge side event, organized by the World Digital Technology Academy, took center stage, underscoring the urgent need for comprehensive talent development to harness emerging technologies for sustainable growth.

“Bridging the digital divide is not just about access to technology, but about empowering people with the skills to thrive in the digital economy,”

remarked Peter Major, Vice Chairman of the UN CSTD and Founding Chairman of World Digital Technology Academy.

Tackling the Digital Divide Head-On

Key Points:

  • Global, industry-aligned digital talent development platform “DigiBridge” launched
  • Focus on artificial intelligence skills for sustainable development and economic inclusion
  • New artificial intelligence security, leadership certification programs announced
  • Cross-sector collaboration for innovative digital education strategies

Redefining Education with Generative AI

The two-day forum, held at the UN headquarters in New York, brought together government leaders, industry experts, and academics to explore how digital technologies like artificial intelligence can reinforce the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

However, concerns were raised about the potential risks of AI, such as data biases and the potential erosion of critical thinking skills.

Tshilidzi Marwala, United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Rector of the United Nations University, delivered a keynote speech on the transformative potential of generative AI in education. While acknowledging the challenges, he advocated for a comprehensive and ethical approach to leveraging AI for personalized learning and improving access to educational resources.

Futureproofing the Workforce

The DigiBridge program, introduced by Yale Li, Co-Founder and Executive Chairman of World Digital Technology Academy, aims to be a powerful catalyst for sustainable digital technology growth and societal advancement. By melding advanced pedagogical techniques with industry demands and international benchmarks, the program offers a lifelong learning platform for students, professionals, and leaders alike.

Furthermore, the World Digital Technology Academy unveiled new artificial intelligence-focused certification programs, including the “Certified Artificial Intelligence Security Professional” and “Certified Chief AI Officer,” to support comprehensive education in this rapidly evolving field.

These initiatives demonstrate World Digital Technology Academy’s commitment to cultivating an inclusive global digital talent pool prepared for the AI-driven economy.

Insights from Industry Pioneers

Industry leaders like Naria K from Microsoft Philanthropies and Dr. Cari L. Miller from the AI Procurement Lab shared insights on the transformative impact of AI on the workplace and the urgency of cross-cutting educational strategies to prepare a future-ready workforce.

Naria K discussed Microsoft’s initiatives to upskill individuals, especially from underserved backgrounds, to navigate and thrive in the evolving AI economy. She highlighted the necessity for AI fluency in all future jobs and the new opportunities created by generative artificial intelligence.

Dr. Miller emphasized the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence use cases and future trends, stressing the need to adapt educational practices to deliver immediate employer value. She advocated for context-specific AI applications and cross-cutting strategies that enhance ROI through applied technical skills and domain knowledge.

Education and Research: The Vanguard

The academic sector also played a pivotal role, with Professor Ryan Ko from the University of Queensland highlighting the synergy between artificial intelligence advancements and cybersecurity training. His team’s success at the International Cybersecurity Challenge demonstrated the effective application of AI in enhancing performance and contributing to sustainable development goals.

Zhifeng Hao, President of Shantou University, emphasized the importance of integrating disciplines like AI and Big Data into education, underscoring the institution’s commitment to supporting the DigiBridge program and promoting digital inclusion. He outlined the evolution from early digital technologies to today’s artificial intelligence-driven landscape, showcasing the university’s proactive approach to adapting curricula.

An Open Invitation for Collaboration

Conclusion and Next Steps

Moving forward, the DigiBridge program aims to foster an open collaborative platform. Here, inviting governments, corporations, NGOs, and other stakeholders to leverage collective strengths for synergistic development becomes essential.

The common goal is to bridge the global digital divide, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to contribute to and benefit from the digital economy.

Melan Xu, Executive Director and Assistant to the Chairman of the World Digital Technology Academy, stated that the program welcomes diverse partnerships to maximize its impact.

“DigiBridge is an open collaborative program. We invite all stakeholders to join us in leveraging our collective strengths for synergistic development, working towards digital inclusion and empowerment for all,” she affirmed.

To Sum Up

The success of the DigiBridge side event underscored the critical importance of international collaboration in tackling the challenges of the digital era. Additionally, it reaffirmed the vital role of multilateral cooperation in promoting digital education equity and inclusive growth worldwide.
