Amid rising concerns about gun violence in the United States, AmeriCorps has partnered with the White House to launch the Safer America Network. This initiative, announced during Gun Violence Awareness Month, aims to prevent gun violence and build resilient communities nationwide through innovative programs and strategic partnerships.

Enhancing Community Resilience

The Safer America Network unites over 25,000 AmeriCorps members and volunteers, working diligently across the country to address gun violence. These dedicated individuals collaborate with schools, mental health providers, and local organizations to build community resilience and prevent violence.

Key Initiatives

Impact

Trauma-informed care training Strengthened community support
Mediation and conflict resolution Reduced violence incidents
Engagement with at-risk youth Improved safety and connection

In cities like Macon and Detroit, AmeriCorps programs have demonstrated significant success in reducing gun violence:

  • Macon: Public Health AmeriCorps members working with One World Link’s Project H.E.R.O. have effectively used the Cure Violence Global model to interrupt and change community norms around gun violence. Their efforts have led to the elimination of gun homicides in the Pleasant Hill community over the past year.
  • Detroit: The Urban Safety Corps, an AmeriCorps program run by Wayne State University in partnership with the Detroit Police Department, has created partnerships with community stakeholders to identify crime hotspots, provide outreach, and expand neighborhood watch groups. This initiative has resulted in a 26% decline in crime, saving an estimated $324.7 million in law enforcement costs.

Collaborative Efforts with the White House

AmeriCorps’ collaboration with the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention underscores a national commitment to tackling gun violence. A summit featuring Vice President Harris and GRAMMY-nominated artist Quavo highlighted youth mental health and community violence intervention. AmeriCorps CEO Michael D. Smith moderated a panel discussing the power of youth movement and programs in addressing gun violence.

Quotes from Officials:

  • “The Safer America Network represents a bold step forward in our efforts to reduce gun violence,” said Michael D. Smith, AmeriCorps CEO.
  • “By sharing information, technology, and know-how, we can successfully address marine and cyber challenges,” noted Consul General Jonathan Alan.

AmeriCorps Programs Make a Difference

In addition to Macon and Detroit, AmeriCorps programs across the country are making a tangible impact:

  • East Harlem: Public Health AmeriCorps members with Concrete Safaris’ Placemaking Corps conduct place-based service-learning interventions, helping young people transform their communities and improve decision-making skills.
  • Fresno: AmeriCorps older volunteers partner with local college students to teach emotional literacy at Kids Clubs and schools. These volunteers help children identify and express their feelings, build coping skills, and reduce loneliness and isolation. This approach also aids in effectively managing challenges at home, school, and in the community.

Voices from the Field

Personal stories highlight the transformative power of AmeriCorps programs. Courtney Ates, a former AmeriCorps member with a history in the criminal justice system, reintegrated into society with the help of a local church and later served with One World Link.

Courtney Ates’ Testimony:

“As an AmeriCorps member, my focus was on providing immediate assistance and creating long-term positive change. By offering a helping hand and necessary resources, we pave the way for individuals to rebuild their lives. It is truly possible to achieve positive life transformation one quality decision at a time.”

Courtney now serves as a subject matter expert in community safety and violence intervention with One World Link.

Looking Ahead

AmeriCorps envisions a future where every community is empowered to prevent gun violence and ensure the safety and well-being of its members. By fostering a culture of service and collaboration, AmeriCorps aims to address the root causes of violence and build sustainable solutions.

The Safer America Network is not just about immediate intervention; it is about creating lasting change and resilience. AmeriCorps calls on individuals and organizations to join this movement, harnessing the power of collective action to create a safer, more peaceful nation.

Together, we can transform lives, strengthen communities, and pave the way for a better America.
