Amid ongoing Russian aggression, Canada reaffirmed its unwavering support for Ukraine at the recent G7 Summit. Prime Minister Trudeau announced a comprehensive aid package and sanctions aimed at bolstering Ukraine’s defense and supporting its citizens, particularly the most vulnerable.

G7 Summit Highlights

At the G7 Leaders’ Summit, Prime Minister Trudeau revealed several key initiatives designed to impose costs on Russia and aid Ukraine in its struggle for sovereignty and peace.

  • Sanctions on Russia: Canada will sanction 27 individuals and entities related to Russia’s military-industrial complex and those involved in sanctions circumvention and disinformation campaigns.
  • Financial Assistance: A $5 billion contribution to the G7 Extraordinary Revenue Acceleration Loans will provide Ukraine with approximately $69 billion USD, helping the nation withstand economic pressures and continue its defense.
  • Military Aid: The delivery of Canadian-built armoured combat support vehicles is already underway, bolstering Ukraine’s armed forces.

Humanitarian Aid Focus

The Summit on Peace in Ukraine in Lucerne saw Trudeau announcing a $52.4 million package focused on humanitarian aid, particularly for children and families affected by the war.

  • Support for Children and Youth: $15 million will be allocated to protect vulnerable children, reintegrate displaced children, and improve child protection services in Ukraine.
  • Justice for War Crimes Survivors: Funds will be used to improve access to justice for survivors of war crimes and increase awareness about the missing persons process.
  • Support for Conflict-Related Sexual Violence Survivors: Male survivors, including prisoners of war, will receive support and care through dedicated programs.

Energy and Infrastructure Support

Due to Russia’s attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, Canada is investing significantly in repairing and rebuilding efforts.

  • Energy Infrastructure: $20 million will support Ukraine’s urgent efforts to replace damaged energy equipment and infrastructure, ensuring civilians have access to essential services like electricity and water.
  • Mine and Explosive Clearance: $15.4 million will help Ukraine clear mines and explosive remnants, making the country safer for its citizens.

Nuclear Security

The Canadian government is also focusing on upholding the safe operations of nuclear facilities in Ukraine.

  • Nuclear Facility Support: The International Atomic Energy Agency will channel a $2 million investment to secure Ukraine’s nuclear sites against potential threats.

International Collaboration and Peace Efforts

At the Summit, Trudeau emphasized the importance of international cooperation in achieving a comprehensive and lasting peace in Ukraine. He chaired a session on the human dimension of the war and met with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to discuss Ukraine’s Peace Formula.

  • International Coalition for the Return of Ukrainian Children: As co-chair, Trudeau highlighted the launch of the #BringKidsBack Communications Network, which aims to return deported and forcibly transferred Ukrainian children to their homes.

In Conclusion

Canada’s multifaceted support for Ukraine, encompassing financial aid, military assistance, humanitarian support, and international collaboration, underscores its dedication to a just and lasting peace.

As Ukrainians continue to defend their homeland, Canada stands firmly with them, demonstrating unwavering solidarity and commitment to upholding democracy and human rights.
