Chris Stark will lead a new control center to turbocharge the government’s mission to provide Britain with cheaper and cleaner power by 2030, Energy Secretary Ed Miliband announced today (Tuesday 9 July).

Transforming the UK’s Energy Sector

The new Mission Control will focus relentlessly on accelerating the transition away from volatile fossil fuel markets to clean, homegrown power.

This initiative aims to boost Britain’s energy independence and cut bills for the British people. Mission Control will be a one-stop shop, bringing together industry experts and officials to troubleshoot, negotiate, and clear the way for energy projects.

Key Collaborations

Mission Control will collaborate with key energy companies and organizations, including Ofgem, the National Grid, and the Electricity System Operator. This collaboration will speed up the connection of new power infrastructure to the grid, ensuring cleaner and cheaper power reaches homes and businesses.

Chris Stark’s Extensive Expertise

Chris Stark, the former chief executive of the Climate Change Committee and former Director of Energy and Climate Change in the Scottish Government, will lead Mission Control.

Stark brings extensive experience working with the energy sector to remove barriers and achieve the clean power mission on the path to net zero.

  • Expert Leadership: Stark’s leadership will drive the mission to achieve clean power by 2030.
  • Industry Collaboration: Stark will work closely with key energy organizations to streamline processes and remove obstacles.

Statements from Key Figures

Secretary of State Ed Miliband

Ed Miliband emphasized the importance of the new initiative:

“This new Mission Control center, benefiting from Chris Stark’s leadership and the expertise of the best in the field, will have a laser-like focus on delivering our mission of clean power by 2030.”

Chris Stark’s Vision

Chris Stark highlighted the significance of the clean power mission:

“Tackling the climate crisis and accelerating the transition to clean power is the country’s biggest challenge and greatest opportunity. By taking action now, we can put the UK at the forefront of the global race to net zero – driving down our carbon emissions but also cutting bills for households.”

Future Prospects for Clean Power

The launch of Mission Control is part of a broader strategy, including Great British Energy, to ensure the UK takes control of its energy system. This strategy aims to cut bills, protect consumers, create jobs, and tackle the climate crisis.

The Role of the Electricity System Operator

The Energy Secretary has tasked the Electricity System Operator with providing advice on the pathway towards the 2030 ambition. This includes expert analysis of the location and type of new investment and infrastructure needed to achieve the goal.

In Conclusion

Chris Stark’s leadership of Mission Control marks a pivotal moment for the UK’s energy sector. The initiative aims to accelerate the transition to clean, homegrown power, ensuring energy independence, reducing bills, and tackling the climate crisis.

With substantial investment and collaboration with key industry players, the UK is poised to become a clean energy superpower by 2030.
