Tucson is gearing up for the 40th Annual El Tour de Tucson on Saturday, November 23, 2024. As cyclists take to the streets, numerous road closures and traffic restrictions will be in place, impacting routes across the city. Here’s everything you need to know to navigate the day smoothly.

A Celebrated Tucson Tradition

El Tour de Tucson is more than just a cycling event—it’s a cherished local tradition. This annual fundraiser attracts thousands of cyclists from across the nation and globe. The event showcases Tucson’s vibrant community spirit while raising funds for charities.

This year’s ride begins early Saturday morning, with courses weaving through the city and surrounding areas. Participants will cycle through stunning desert landscapes, downtown streets, and key Tucson landmarks.

 

Road Closures and Traffic Restrictions

To accommodate the event, several major streets will close temporarily. Here’s a breakdown of the most significant closures:

Downtown Tucson

  • Friday, November 22, 6:00 a.m.
    • Cushing Street: Closed from Stone Avenue to El Paso Avenue.
  • Saturday, November 23, starting at 4:00 a.m.
    • Sixth Avenue: Closed from 15th Avenue to 22nd Street (reopens at 11:30 a.m.).
    • Stone Avenue: Closed from 14th Avenue to 18th Street (reopens at 12:30 p.m.).

Additional closures include Main Avenue, 12th Street, Simpson Street, and Fourth Avenue, among others.

 

Regional Closures

  • Aviation Parkway: Eastbound lanes closed from Broadway Boulevard to Golf Links Road (7:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.).
  • Houghton Road at Pima County Fairgrounds: Closed from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
  • Continental Road: Closed from Camino Casa Verde to Duval Mine Road (9:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.).

 

Traffic Tips and Safety Advice

Planning ahead will make navigating the city easier during El Tour.

  • Leave Early: Arriving early helps avoid congestion around road closures.
  • Check Alternate Routes: Use traffic apps to identify open roads and detours.
  • Watch for Cyclists: Drive carefully and remain alert for riders near event routes.

Pedestrian and bicycle access will remain open, and emergency services will have uninterrupted access to all areas.
