Jakarta, Indonesia – Oct 20, 2024 – Prabowo Subianto sworn in as Indonesia’s 8th president. US Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken offers congratulations, highlighting shared democratic values and longstanding US-Indonesia ties.

A Milestone in Indonesian Democracy

Indonesia, the world’s third-largest democracy, continues to play a pivotal role in Southeast Asia. Subianto’s inauguration comes after he secured nearly 60% of the vote in the February 2024 elections, succeeding President Joko Widodo, who completed his maximum two terms.

The peaceful transition reflects the country’s commitment to democratic values, a bond it shares with the United States.

Blinken’s statement highlighted the importance of this alliance, particularly as the two nations celebrate 75 years of diplomatic relations this year.

He expressed optimism about working with Subianto and the Indonesian government to strengthen their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. This partnership is not just about political alliances; it’s about the deep-rooted economic, cultural, and security cooperation that has flourished between the two countries.

Evolving Diplomatic Relations: From Past to Present

The history between President Subianto and the United States has had its challenges. During his military career, Subianto faced allegations of human rights abuses in the 1990s, leading to strained relations with Washington. However, over the years, diplomatic ties have evolved, reflecting the broader strategic interests of both nations in the Indo-Pacific region.

In the lead-up to his inauguration, the United States demonstrated its renewed support by sending a high-profile delegation, including Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, and Admiral Samuel Paparo, Commander of the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command.

Their presence underscored the significance Washington places on its relationship with Jakarta, especially as geopolitical dynamics in the Indo-Pacific grow more complex.

The Future of US-Indonesia Cooperation

Under Subianto’s leadership, Indonesia aims to maintain its traditional non-aligned foreign policy, balancing relations between major powers like the United States and China.

Secretary Blinken acknowledged the importance of this approach, stressing how collaboration can help achieve regional stability and prosperity. The United States sees Indonesia as a critical partner in ensuring a free and open Indo-Pacific.

Initiatives and Areas of Focus

Subianto’s government has pledged to continue policies from the previous administration, focusing on economic growth and stability. The US-Indonesia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership aims to address the following areas:

  • Economic Collaboration: Boosting trade and investment between the two nations to create jobs and spur economic growth in both countries.
  • Security and Defense: Strengthening military cooperation to support regional security, ensuring maritime stability in the Indo-Pacific.

These initiatives signal a commitment to building a future where both nations can thrive while addressing shared challenges, such as climate change, human rights, and regional stability.

Why It Matters for North America

For the United States, Indonesia’s stability and growth are critical, given its strategic position in Southeast Asia and its influence within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). A stronger partnership with Indonesia aligns with Washington’s broader goal of countering other powers and ensuring a balanced, rules-based order in the region.

The shared commitment to democratic values and economic development offers the United States an opportunity to deepen ties with one of Asia’s most influential nations.

Blinken’s statement not only celebrated the new administration but also served as a reminder of the importance of international collaboration in promoting a secure and prosperous global community.

Supporting Indonesia’s Vision

President Subianto’s inauguration marks the beginning of a new chapter in Indonesia’s democratic journey. In his inaugural speech, he emphasized unity and economic progress, calling on all Indonesians to work together to address national challenges.

This vision aligns with the goals of the US-Indonesia partnership, making it likely that the two countries will continue to collaborate closely on mutual interests.

As Indonesia steps into this new era, North Americans have much to gain from a strengthened alliance. Whether through economic opportunities, cultural exchanges, or security collaborations, this partnership has the potential to shape the future of the Indo-Pacific and beyond.

The inauguration of President Subianto is not just a national event for Indonesia; it’s a moment that reaffirms the ties between two great democracies committed to a common vision for peace, prosperity, and progress.
