Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is gearing up to represent Canada on the global stage at two pivotal summits: the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders’ Meeting in Lima, Peru, and the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

From November 15 to 19, Trudeau will engage with international leaders to advance economic growth, strengthen international cooperation, and promote Canada’s commitment to sustainability and human rights.

The Power of Partnership: Why These Summits Matter

Canada’s participation in APEC and the G20 reflects its commitment to fostering international cooperation, sustainable growth, and job creation.

These summits provide crucial opportunities for Canada to reinforce its trade relationships, particularly in the Asia-Pacific and Americas regions, which are vital to Canada’s economic prosperity.

Canada at APEC: A Stronger Pacific Partnership

The APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting, held in Lima, Peru from November 15-16, is a significant event where Trudeau aims to bolster Canada’s economic and trade relations with Asia-Pacific nations.

APEC’s 21 member economies account for over 60% of global GDP, highlighting the importance of strengthening Canadian ties with this dynamic region.

The main objectives for Canada at APEC include:

  • Deepening Trade Relations: Trudeau will focus on expanding opportunities for Canadian businesses, especially small- and medium-sized enterprises, to access Asia-Pacific markets.
  • Advancing the Indo-Pacific Strategy: This strategy aims to strengthen Canada’s presence and economic influence in the region.
  • Supporting Job Creation: The Prime Minister will prioritize initiatives to secure good-paying jobs for Canadians by promoting investment in sectors such as technology, energy, and agriculture.

APEC’s focus on collaboration aligns with Trudeau’s vision of economic cooperation. By reinforcing Canadian involvement in the Asia-Pacific, the government hopes to open doors for businesses, create job opportunities, and build lasting partnerships.

G20 and Global Cooperation for Equality and Sustainability

Following APEC, Trudeau will head to the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from November 18-19. The G20 brings together the world’s major economies, representing over 85% of global GDP, making it a powerful forum for tackling shared challenges.

Trudeau’s agenda includes:

  • Reducing Global Inequality: Trudeau will advocate for policies that promote fair wages and economic growth, ensuring opportunities reach everyone.
  • Climate Action and Sustainability: As part of Canada’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, Trudeau will encourage sustainable practices and emphasize the need for a united global response to climate change.
  • Strengthening Global Supply Chains: The Prime Minister will work with international partners to develop resilient supply chains that support economic stability and security.

At the G20, Trudeau will reiterate Canada’s dedication to democratic values and a stable, rules-based international order, focusing on peace and prosperity for all.

Canada’s Economic Ties with APEC and G20 Countries

Canada’s trade and investment relationships with APEC and G20 member economies are fundamental to its economic strategy.

Here’s a snapshot of Canada’s connections with these regions:

Economic Bloc

Share of Global GDP

Canada’s Total Merchandise Trade (2023)

Canadian Investment (2023)

APEC 60% 84% of merchandise trade Significant growth areas in technology and energy
G20 85% 75% of global trade Strategic partnerships in climate and energy sectors

Why This Matters to Canadians

Canadians stand to benefit directly from the outcomes of these summits in many ways.

Important reasons include:

  • Economic Growth: Expanded trade agreements and partnerships help Canadian businesses thrive, creating opportunities for job growth and economic development.
  • Job Creation: With Trudeau’s focus on promoting Canadian industries abroad, more good-paying jobs are expected in technology, clean energy, and other sectors.
  • A Safer, Sustainable Future: The summits also allow Canada to push for climate action, peace, and democracy, contributing to a stable, secure world.

Final Thoughts

Prime Minister Trudeau’s participation in APEC and the G20 underlines Canada’s role as a proactive, engaged player on the global stage.

With a focus on economic cooperation, sustainable development, and a secure international order, these summits are not just about policy—they’re about ensuring a brighter future for Canadians at home and abroad.
