Have you ever wondered what happens to your recycling after it’s picked up?

On October 31, 2024, Tucson residents will have the unique opportunity to see the city’s waste management system in action.

The City of Tucson’s Environmental & General Services Department (EGSD) is offering an exclusive tour of two important facilities: the Republic Services Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) and the Los Reales Sustainability Campus.

Learn how Tucson handles recycling, hazardous waste, and composting, all while discovering the city’s innovative sustainability efforts.

Get an Inside Look at Tucson’s Recycling Process

The guided tour will start at the Price Service Center, located at 4004 S. Park Ave. After a brief introduction, participants will board a bus to the first stop: the Republic Services Materials Recovery Facility (MRF).

Here, you’ll get a rare behind-the-scenes look at how recyclable materials, collected in the blue barrel program, are sorted, baled, and marketed. From paper to plastics, the facility plays a crucial role in helping Tucson divert waste from landfills and promote sustainable practices.

This is an opportunity for residents to see the complex sorting machinery in action and understand how their recycling efforts contribute to a greener Tucson.

The tour will also provide insights into the challenges faced by the recycling industry, from contamination issues to fluctuating material markets.

Explore the Los Reales Sustainability Campus

The second stop on the tour is the Los Reales Sustainability Campus, Tucson’s central hub for handling household hazardous waste and promoting innovative waste diversion programs. Consequently, this facility showcases the city’s commitment to environmental stewardship.
At this facility, participants will witness firsthand how the city manages hazardous materials like chemicals and old electronics in an environmentally responsible manner. Moreover, they will gain insight into the operational processes that drive sustainable waste management.
Furthermore, a stop at the composting site will provide visitors with an up-close look at the FoodCycle program. Specifically, this innovative initiative collects food waste and transforms it into nutrient-rich compost, illustrating the city’s circular economy approach.
This hands-on experience will highlight the significance of reducing waste and promoting sustainable practices.

Additionally, attendees will learn about the construction of landfill cells designed to protect groundwater and how Tucson is taking steps toward a more sustainable future. The Los Reales Sustainability Campus is an integral part of the city’s long-term vision for reducing landfill use and conserving resources.
